Glacier boys 4th in golf; Flathead’s Mercer 3rd

BUTTE — The Glacier boys, led by Will Salonen, Keaton Cassidy and Sam Manaker, are tied for fourth place with Missoula Sentinel after the opening round of the Class AA State Golf Tournament at the Butte Country Club on Thursday.

Glacier and Sentinel are both at 312, just two shots behind third-place Billings Skyview.

Bozeman is comfortably in front with a 284 score. Billings West, 309, is second.

Salonen shot 76 and is in a three-way tie for ninth place.

Cassidy and Manaker both carded 78, which tied them with four other golfers for 12th place.

Flathead, in last place with a 374 total, did not have a golfer in the top 15.

Justus Verge of Bozeman shot a 4-under 66 to top the leaderboard.

In girls play, Flathead’s Marcella Mercer is tied with Bozeman’s Anna Danenhauer for third. Both shot 78.

Carrie Carpenter of Billings West had the best round with a 73. Emily Garden of Sentinel is second with a 77.

Glacier’s Kate Trunkle is tied for 14th place with Maya Priebe of Bozeman. Both turned in 89s.

Bozeman, 331, leads the team standings with Billings West, 339, second and Helena High, 357, third.

Flathead, 396, is eighth and Glacier, 408, ninth.

Play resumes today at 10 a.m. with the final 18 holes.
