Williams said flames were at least 40 to 50 feet when firefighters arrived. About 100 cars that were stacked on top of each other were destroyed. A nearby home suffered some superficial damage, but fire crews kept it from doing more damage. Some homes in the area were evacuated.
No injuries were reported and Williams said the cause was being investigated, although it would be difficult because of the amount of damage.
Williams said the fire was contained and knocked down at about 6 a.m. and the scene was cleared at 8 a.m.
Twenty-five firefighters from Creston, Evergreen and Kalispell and South Kalispell worked to put out the blaze.
