Bulldogs notch a pair of volleyball victories

WHITEFISH - Whitefish picked up a pair of Class A nonconference volleyball victories on Thursday versus foes from Southwestern A.

Whitefish def. Hamilton 25-16, 25-18, 25-20 after earlier dispensing with Corvallis 25-15, 24-26, 25-13, 25-16.

"It was a great day, a long day," Whitefish coach Jackie Fuller said.

"A lot of volleyball. It puts you in a tournament atmosphere. The kids played hard."

Whitefish faced Corvallis in the afternoon and Hamilton at night.

Kaitlyn Wehrli's name popped up in three statistics - five kills, two blocks and six aces -versus Hamilton. Her kill and block totals were team highs.

Against Corvallis, Olivia Nagler had six kills, one block and 12 assists.

Jessica Slaybaugh had 15 assists and seven aces, both were team highs.

Whitefish's next action is the Missoula Invitational next weekend.

POLSON - The Lady Pirates kept their unbeaten streak alive with two nonconference wins at home. Polson (9-0 overall) defeated Hamilton 25-16, 25-22 and 25-12 in the opener and later defeated Corvallis 25-13, 25-8 and 25-17.

"My girls came out just fired up and put the ball down probably as hard as they ever had," Polson coach Jan Toth said.

The Pirates had 78 kills on the day (44 against Hamilton, 34 against Corvallis) and 30 aces (10 against Hamilton, 20 against Corvallis).

EUREKA - Jackie Mee had 20 kills and three blocks as the Libby Loggers defeated host Eureka in a nonconference volleyball match. Scores were 25-11, 25-22, 21-25, 25-13.

"We came out scared and that cost us. You cannot freeball a team like that. But I'm proud of the kids because we didn't quit. We had our moments," said Eureka coach Rhonda Hammond.

"But Jackie Mee is just a terrific volleyball player. She just killed us and there wasn't a whole lot we could do about it. My tallest player is 5-foot-8," she said.

Eureka (10-4, 7-1) was led by Carly Hammond with 15 kills and 17 digs. Tayler Holder added 11 kills and served three aces.

"Tasha Mikita had some great plays at the net, too," Hammond added.

The Lions travel to Superior on Saturday.

Julia Bray had 11 kills and two blocks and Jordan Danz 12 digs and five aces to guide Stillwater Christian School to a nonconference victory.

"Both teams played solid defense tonight, which made for some exciting volleyball," Stillwater coach Dave Shawback said.

"My girls are really playing well as a team, playing within their roles and all the girls are able to contribute. Julia Bray had another outstanding match at the net, but she had a lot of support from Linnea Hashley setting and all the passers."

Stillwater plays the Whitefish High School JV on Monday in Whitefish.
