December book club discussions focus on people

| November 28, 2012 5:00 PM

December’s book club discussions will focus on people, as narrative biographies and memoirs are talked over at this month’s meetings.

The Flathead County Library Book Club will discuss Robert K. Massie’s “Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman.”

The narrative biography tells the story of an obscure German princess who became one of the most remarkable, powerful and captivating women in history. By sheer determination, Catherine transformed herself from a girl born into a minor noble family into empress of Russia.

The club meets at 5 p.m. Dec. 11 in the basement conference room at the main library in Kalispell. For more information, contact Marylane Pannell at kuhlpan@cyberport.net or 257-5793.

The Bad Rock Book Discussion Group will discuss “The Christmas Sweater” by Glenn Beck.

When Eddie was 12, all he wanted for Christmas was a bike. Instead, he got a sweater — and began a dark, painful journey toward manhood.

The club will also review all the books it discussed this year and review its 2013 book list.

The club meets at 7 p.m. Dec. 13 at Bad Rock Books on Nucleus Avenue in Columbia Falls. Treats are provided.

For more information, call Carol Rocks at 892-0515.

The Montana History Book Club will discuss Norman Maclean’s “A River Runs Through It.”

The American classic, based on Maclean’s childhood experiences, has captivated readers with its vivid descriptions of life along the Blackfoot River and its near magical blend of fly fishing with the troubling affections of the heart.

Copies are available in the gift shop at the Museum at Central School. The book club meets in the museum’s basement conference room at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13.
