Whitefish boys, girls finish 3rd

BUTTE — Whitefish’s Marlow Schulz completed a sweep of the sprints for the third straight year and became just the fourth girl in Montana history to win four 100-meter dash championships, as the Bulldogs placed both their girls and boys teams third at the Class A state track meet in Butte on Saturday.

Schulz outlegged Corvallis’ Sadi Henderson in the 100 with a time of 12.40 seconds to claim her fourth state title in the event. She is the 20th girl to win an event four times and the first to win all three of the short races at least three times. Schulz ran away with the 200 on the competition’s second day, winning in 24.69, nearly a second better that the field. It was her third 200 title, adding to her third 400 title earned Friday. The future St. John’s (N.Y.) athlete earned 11 individual state championships in her career.

Her run highlighted a big day for the Bulldogs, who finished third as a team with 63 points. Corvallis won with ease, scoring 129.5.

The Whitefish girls 400 relay team set a new Class A state record in 48.54 seconds, beating the old record of 49.12 set by Billings Central. The Bulldog girls finished fifth in the 1,600 relay.

Whitefish’s Phoebe Guercio finished fourth in the 300 hurdles and fifth in the triple jump. Grace Kurtz finished sixth in both the 100 and 200.

Columbia Falls’ Samantha Mundel won the 3,200 by more than 10 seconds in 11:43.79, leading the Wildkats to a seventh place finish with 28 points. Carla Nicosia finished fourth in the triple jump, fifth in the 300 hurdles and sixth 100 hurdles. The Wildkats were sixth in the 400 relay.

Polson’s girls finished 11th with 10 points, earning sixth of those on Saturday as Claudia Hewston finished fourth in the 800 and Madison Wheeler sixth in the 300 hurdles. The Lady Pirates’ 1,600 relay finished sixth.

Whitefish’s Luke May won the javelin with a personal-best throw of 206 feet, 7 inches to lead the Bulldog boys to a third place finish with 58 points. The boys team race was much tighter with Hamilton eeking out the championship with 64 points. Corvallis was second with 62.

The Bulldogs’ Keaton Grove finished second in both the 110 and 300 hurdles. Alex Wilson finished fifth in the 110 hurdles, and Koler Kanistanaux was fifth in the discus. Jed Nagler was sixth in both the 100 and 200. The Bulldog 400 relay finished second.

Polson’s Andrew Weltz won the triple jump with a leap of 43-3 1/2, leading the Pirates to an 11th place finish with 17 points. Jacob Clairmont finished sixth in both the 110 and 300 hurdles and Austin Corrigan was sixth in discus.

Columbia Falls’ Nakia Alexander finished second in the triple jump and the Wildcats were sixth in the 1,600 relay to score all nine of their team points on the last day, finishing in 18th.
