Class B volleyball: Bigfork, Libby, Eureka all eliminated at divisional tournament
LIBBY — Bigfork and Eureka each stayed alive with a five-set wins early on Friday at the Western B Divisional tournament only to see their seasons come to an end in the evening on a rough day for area teams.
The Valkyries beat Libby in their first match of the day, eliminating the Loggers from the tournament with an 18-25, 25-16, 25-22, 14-25, 15-6 five-set win. Lana Berg led Bigfork with 13 kills, 16 digs and five aces.
Libby had 39 kills, four more than the Vals, led by 11 from Mekhi Sykes.
Eureka got the day started with a win over Ronan, dropping the Chiefs 14-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 15-12.
But the Lions were eliminated in another five-set match, nearly pulling off a giant comeback before falling 25-12, 25-21, 19-25, 17-25, 15-12. Amanda Peterson led Eureka with 20 kills and 20 digs in a losing effort.
Bigfork met its end in straight sets against Class 7B regular season champion Thompson Falls, 25-16, 25-6, 27-25. Miranda Campbell paced the Valkyries with six kills. Berg added 11 digs, three blocks and three aces.
Thompson Falls defeated Anaconda in the nightcap to guarantee themselves a spot in next week’s state tournament in Bozeman as they can finish no worse than third.
Florence is the only remaining unbeaten team in the Divisional tournament after taking down Missoula Loyola in three sets. Both Florence and Loyola have also sewn up top three finishes in the divisional.
Play resumes today at 11 a.m. with the Blue Knights and Breakers taking the court. The winner will play Florence at 1 p.m. in the first of two possible championship matches.
