Whitefish Community Library invites the public to the lawn east of the library at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 11, to see Montana Wild Wings Recovery at the organization’s annual visit.

The raptor rehab and education organization gives raptors a home when injuries make it impossible for them to return to the wild. These birds become the basis of the education program, providing the public with an opportunity to learn about and view the birds up close.

Wild Wings is one event of Whitefish Community Library’s Summer Reading Challenge. Upcoming events include visits from local arts organizations, North Valley Music School, Stumptown Art Studio and Alpine Theatre Project.

For a schedule and more information on the Summer Reading Challenge, call the library at 862-9914.

Girl Scouts to visit West Shore State Park

In collaboration with the National Association of State Park Directors and Girl Scouts of the USA, Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming is participating in the first-ever Girl Scouts Love State Parks weekend in July by hosting a variety of events at six state parks located throughout Montana and Wyoming on Saturday, July 13.

Locally, the Girl Scouts are hosting a program from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day at West Shore State Park south of Lakeside.

Girls will explore what the parks have to offer and to learn what thinking like a citizen scientist is all about. The programs are not just for girls, but also offer a chance for family and friends to experience the great outdoors.

Visit gsmw.org/events for more details on the Girl Scouts Love State Parks event and to register. The registration deadline for the programs is Monday, July 8.

Free light bulbs from Flathead Electric Cooperative

Starting this month, Flathead Electric Cooperative will mail out a free efficiency kit containing up to eight LED bulbs for any co-op member who requests it.

The A19 bulbs are 800 lumens (equivalent to 60 watts), warm white and dimmable, and are estimated to last 15,000 hours.

“This program will benefit Flathead Electric Co-op members in more ways than on,” FEC director of energy and member services Ross Holter said in a press release. Holter says the program helps the co-op meet the federal efficiency requirements set by the Bonneville Power Administration.

“We pay a certain amount for energy efficiency through our wholesale power rates with BPA. If we don’t utilize those funds for efficiency projects in our service area each year, those dollars get used in other areas across the Northwest,” Holter said. “Offering these free energy kits ensures that we are good stewards of our members’ money. And, it directly benefits FEC members by giving them access to free LED bulbs, which provides them with an easy way to use energy more efficiently.”

Holter notes that achieving energy efficiency in a home usually requires making an upfront investment before savings can be realized. So, the fact that these LED bulbs are free for the asking is an uncommon opportunity of which all members should take advantage.

“This is one of those rare deals that truly is a win-win for all concerned,” he said.

This program will be available until Sept. 15, or while supplies last, so FEC members who would like to receive free LED bulbs need to order them at their earliest convenience. Visit flatheadelectric.com/freebulbs or call 751-4483.
