When the Night Comes, an annual sleep out event for the Sparrow’s Nest of Northwest Montana homeless shelter for teens, will be held from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Majestic Valley Arena.

For one night, volunteers will take a step back from the comfort of their homes to fundraise for the homeless youth in the community.

Sparrow’s Nest residents come from all walks of life. Some have been sleeping in cars, tents, or couch surfing with friends or family.

Members of the community are encouraged to support them by experiencing one night of homelessness.

It is currently estimated that there are more than 320 homeless youth in the community. Homeless youth are often unable to complete their high school education. Because they are minors they have limited rights and resources, plus there is a stigma associated with seeking help.

Family breakdown, domestic violence, chronic generational homelessness, lack of affordable housing, and aging out of foster care are all reasons why youth find themselves homeless.

Sparrow’s Nest provides a safe and supportive environment for residents to finish high school, It is a long-term alternative housing program free of cost to residents and provides safe, stable and supportive housing to unaccompanied homeless high school students.

Sparrow’s Nest offers case management services to ensure residents can successfully transition into adulthood. All residents engage in weekly life skills classes, as well as counseling service, including finding employment that matches their skills and future.
