Flathead splits vs Big Sky; Glacier swept by Sentinel

Arsen Sokolov scored two goals and assisted on another as the Flathead Braves downed Missoula Big Sky 5-1 in Western AA boys’ soccer Tuesday.

Kelvin Pandina, Trevan McDowell and Dakota Holmes also scored for Flathead, which improved to 2-3. The Braves outshot the Eagles 22-2

“It was just good to come out and get a (good) result,” Flathead coach Zach Brenneman said. “We started slow but we got a good result in the second half.”

MISSOULA — Tait Kuchenbrod’s goal in the third minute held up for the Sentinel Spartans in a foul-heavy boys’ contest.

“Real physical match,” noted Glacier coach Ryan Billiet. “They were very well organized. We did a nice job keeping pace after they scored so early.

“All in all the guys finished strong. It’s an opportunity to kind of bounce back on Thursday (Big Sky visits Glacier, with the girls at 3:30 p.m. the boys after). “I’m excited to see how the guys respond.”

MISSOULA — At Missoula, the visiting Wolfpack actually outshot the host Spartans 12-9 but didn’t score until Emily Cleveland’s free kick in the 78th minute.

“Sentinel’s a great team, but the girls played outstanding soccer tonight,” Glacier coach Brenden Byrd said. “They (the Spartans) are tough. A top-four team for sure.”

At Missoula, Ellie Hawes scored her team’s lone goal in the 38th minute for the Bravettes, who outshot the Eagles 17-4 but couldn’t get the tiebreaker. Flathead is 3-1-1.

“We are playing great,” Flathead coach Bledy Doda said. “We need to work a little more on finishing and having so many chances. We need to close the game out. Overall, I am very happy for the soccer we are playing.”

Aleeya Derlatka had the assist on Hawes’ goal.
