Madison Becker scored in the 21st minute for the Glacier Wolfpack, and that goal held up for a 1-0 win over Flathead in a crosstown girls’ soccer match Tuesday at Legends Stadium.

It was the first game of a doubleheader; in the nightcap the Glacier boys ran out to a 7-1 lead on the way to a 7-3 victory.

The Wolfpack (5-2 in the Western AA and overall) held on through some strong pushes by the Bravettes, who fell to 3-2-2.

“It was a barnburner down to the very end,” Glacier coach Brenden Byrd said. “They had multiple chances to score. They had a shot go off the post (at about the 60th minute) -- a beautifully placed shot… We snuck out of that one for sure.

“You have to credit the entire team. Not a single player let down. There were times when Flathead looked a lot more dangerous than us and times when we looked more dangerous than them. So the game could easily have gone either way.”

Glacier, which outshot Flathead 12-5, got an assist form Reese Leichtfuss. Ella Wilson got the shutout in goal.

“It was an important win for us,” Byrd said. “Flathead and us and Helena High are battling for the top three spots. Three points (for a win) right now are huge. And Flathead is really coming on as a high-level team.”
