Loggers walk off Twins in walk-filled opener

LIBBY — It was almost literally a walk-off win for the Libby Loggers Friday, who tied the game with a bases-loaded walk, then beat the Glacier Twins 6-5 when the next batter, Tripp Zhang, was hit by a pitch.

Libby (5-10) beat Glacier for the second time in three meetings, in the first game of a Western A doubleheader. The second game hadn’t ended at presstime.

The Twins (17-8) led 4-1 after a 4-run third inning, and 5-4 after Mikey Glass squeezed hom Jacob Polumbus with a bunt in the top of the seventh.

Libby responded with a leadoff single by Ayden Williamson; two one-out walks followed, and with two out Kyle Jenkins’ based-loaded walk forced in Williamson with the tying run; Zhang was hit by a pitch to force in Rusty Gillespie.

A bases-loaded HBP also capped Libby’s 3-run sixth inning: Caden Williams and Jenkin had RBI singles before Tucker Masters was hit, forcing in Williams to tie the game at 4-4.

An errant pickoff throw, sacrifice flies from Jacob Polumbus and George Robbins and a double by Glass gave Glacier its 4-1 lead.

Masters, who drove in two, also got the win on the mound with four innings of hitless relief, though he walked four Twins. He struck out four. The teams combined to issue 16 walks (nine by the Twins) and five hit batters.

Hayden Meehan threw a solid 4 2/3 innings of relief for the Twins, taking over for Zach Veneman in the second inning.
