HAMILTON — It was a fast track at the Western A-B-C Top Ten Meet that lasted well into Tuesday evening. Just ask Jay Beagle.

The Libby senior was among many athletes who put up excellent times in a twilight meet that drew 20 teams to the Bitterroot Valley. Beagle’s time of 49.18 seconds in the 400 meters is the fastest time, regardless of class, in Montana this spring. He also won the 200.

Ridger Palma of Missoula’s Loyola Sacred Heart was second at 49.58 and that’s the fastest time in Class B.

Hamilton won the boys title — Whitefish cruised to the girls’ championship — behind Lane Cole, who ran the 800 in a state-best 1:58.76. The Broncs scored 73.5 to 61 for Class B Boulder. Dillon was next at 53 followed by Bigfork at 50. The Vikings’ Wyatt Duke won the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 4 inches.

Seeley-Swan’s Walker McDonald won both the shot put (51 feet) and discus (164-2) in state-best fashion as well.

In the triple jump Ronan’s Girma Detwiler (44-2) and Whitefish’s Gabe Menicke went 1-2, and they sit second and fourth in Class A in that event.

Senior sprinter Mikenna Ells led the Whitefish girls, winning the 200 and running the fastest 400 time (57.79) in the state so far this spring.

The Bulldogs also got wins from Brooke Zetooney in the 100, Isabelle Cooke in the 800, Erin Wilde in the high jump and both relay teams. They scored 106 points to 58 for Dillon and 52.5 for Corvallis. Columbia Falls was next at 46.

Charlo’s Carlee Fryberger was second to Zetooney in the 100, and Fryberger’s time of 12.73 sits fifth in the state overall and first in Class C. Zetooney’s time of 12.69 was .01 off her Class A-leading best this spring.

Fryberger also won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.88 seconds. She is the second hurdler to break 15 seconds this spring; Missoula Sentinel’s Brooke Stayner is the other. Her time of 47.33 in the 300 hurdles also leads Class C; she finished second to Townsend standout Havyn Vandenacre in that race.

The Wildkats’ Lara Erickson (5:18.97) finished second to Townsend’s Emma Stolte (5:18.15) in the 1,600, and both runners now own the best marks for Classes A and B.
