The groundbreaking film, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” starring Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn and Sidney Poitier, will be shown for Movie Night at the Museum Nov. 19.

This movie classic was the ninth movie starring Tracy and Hepburn and also featured Katharine Houghton. Released in 1967, the comedic drama tells the story of a liberal couple forced to face the reality of interracial marriage when their daughter (Houghton) announces her engagement to an African American (Poitier).

While most reviews were favorable, some critics felt that the film presented an idealized view of the issue of interracial marriage rather than dealing with the real-life challenges faced by most couples during that period.

Tracy was ill during filming but insisted on finishing the movie, which was completed 17 days before he died in June 1967. Saying it would be too painful for her, Hepburn never saw the completed film, which was released six months after Tracy’s death. The film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards with Hepburn winning best actress and William Rose taking home the best writing award.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The film starts at 7 p.m. at the Northwest Montana History Museum, 124 Second Ave. E. in Kalispell. Admission and popcorn are free, but donations are accepted to help defray costs. Soda, water, beer, and wine are available for purchase. Seating is provided, but viewers are welcome to bring their own cushions or seating.

Marking its 25-year anniversary, the museum brings the past alive through exhibits, artifacts, educational programs, and events. Regular museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. For more information call 756-8381.
