Judge revokes deferred sentence of Whitefish man convicted of gas station beating

A Whitefish man convicted of felony assault at an Evergreen gas station in 2024 saw his deferred sentence revoked last month after he allegedly attacked a woman inside an automobile.

Judge Amy Eddy found Tyler Craig Arterburn, 21, in violation of probation at a Jan. 22 hearing in Flathead County District Court. After revoking his previous sentence, she handed down a six-year sentence with the state Department of Corrections.  

Eddy gave Arterburn credit for a combined 77 days of time served and 10 months of street time.  

Arterburn earned his original sentence after pleading guilty to felony aggravated assault in connection with the July 20, 2024 incident in Evergreen.  

Arterburn punched and then tackled another man inside the store before knocking the victim's head against a drink fridge, court documents said. Though the other man went limp, Arterburn continued to beat him and stomped on his head before leaving, according to court documents. 

Arterburn's revocation proceedings began after Montana Highway Patrol troopers and Flathead County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to an Oct. 2, 2025 motor vehicle crash. The victim told investigators that she was driving when she told Arterburn that she had moved on from their relationship.  

Arterburn then grabbed the steering wheel and sent the vehicle into a guardrail, court documents said. The victim accused Arterburn of hitting her with a vape pen, pulling her hair and punching her during the alleged assault.  

Arterburn fled before authorities arrived at the scene, court documents said.  

Eddy remanded Arterburn to the custody of the Sheriff's Office following January's revocation proceedings. He remains listed on the county jail roster.
