Hoping to save its life, they called the veterinarian named on the dog's collar tag. The paging service for the clinic wouldn't call a doctor because the couple didn't own the dog. So they took it to their own veterinarian, who tried in vain to save the animal. They agreed to pay for the medical care, even though the dog didn't survive.
