A devastating head-on collision Thursday night on U.S. 93 between Kalispell and Whitefish claimed the lives of a pregnant Columbia Falls woman and her 13-year-old son.

A resident of an apartment complex on Montana 35 in Evergreen told investigators that after Flathead County sheriff's deputies left a neighboring unit, someone in a black ski mask showed up. He had been arrested on a warrant for contempt of court earlier in the day.

As he was going, a shot was fired. Thinking he was hit in the hand, the 55-year-old man called Flathead County sheriff's deputies from a Hungry Horse convenience store. Turns out he hadn't been shot, but may have put his hand through a window. He was taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center. The person who allegedly fired the gun apparently only had one bullet. No arrests have been made.

Deputies decided to wait until the woman was sober to take her statement.
