Dina Lea Hutchinson, 48

Dina Lea Hutchinson, 48, came into this world in Riverside, Calif., on Dec. 28, 1960. She made her transition into pure spiritual energy on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, 2009. She moved to Kalispell to be with her true soul mate, James Hutchinson, in 1999. Her happiest day on earth was in Fort Benton on May 27, 2006, when she and Jim exchanged their marriage vows. She fell in love with Montana and began beautifying the plot of land she called heaven. It was in Kalispell where she earned her certification as a Master Gardener. The gardens that she planned, planted and grew were in bloom all season long, revealing the depth of her creativity, her love of nature and her passion for flowers. Dina amazed people with her creativity. Her intense interest and study of Native American cultures throughout most of her life led her to be an accomplished beader. Every Native American item that she created had spiritual meaning, and with each bead she used, she added a prayer. The designs that she developed and her application of specific beads brought her works to life. She had a big heart and most often she was thinking of others. During her journey with cancer, many jewelry items were made for the chemo and radiation staff, as well as family members and friends. She was beautiful from the inside out, had a zest for life and maintained a sense of humor that kept everyone laughing and happy. She was extremely strong-minded and possessed a powerful determination to overcome obstacles. When life s challenges arose, she drew upon her spirituality, her inner truth and her unfailing honesty to see her through. Dina was very spiritual, always looked on the bright side and was a loving mentor to those around her. She was one to teach by example, and she touched many people s lives with her knowledge and insights of those deeper spiritual truths she had obtained. Dina had one foot in the spiritual world and the other foot here on earth. She planted seeds of love in the hearts of those she met and showered her loved ones with her laughter and her compassion. She was an angel on earth and now her spirit soars high in the Celestial Heavens. She will always be our guardian angel and our greatest inspiration. She precedes in death her husband, James Hutchinson; mother, Jerry Jarrett; father, Bud Myrick Sr.; brother, Jobe Myrick; stepfather, Bill Jarrett; stepsons, Timothy Hutchinson and Jason Hutchinson; stepdaughter, Carrie Hutchinson; 10 grandchildren; and many family and friends. She will be greatly missed. As she wished, a ceremony is planned in her garden next year when it is in full bloom. Any donations can be in Dina Hutchinson s name to Frontier Hospice, 29 Second St. E., Kalispell, MT 59901. Many blessings on your journey, Sweet Dina; we are not far behind you.

Waltraud Wally Margarete Caffrey passed away Nov. 20, 2009. She was born on Feb. 22, 1926, in Buchen, Germany, to Karl and Kaethe (Frey) Oeftering. Not long afterward, the family moved to the historic city of Heidelberg, Germany, where Wally spent her childhood with two brothers, Helmut and Richard, and two sisters, Gisela and Ingeborg. Shortly after World War II ended, Wally met her husband-to-be, George Caffrey, who was a soldier in the American army. After several years of dating and courtship, George and Wally were married on Feb. 1, 1950, in Heidelberg. Then they moved to Denver, where George s family of origin was living. Wally became a U.S. citizen on Aug. 31, 1954. Although she worked for a few years in secretarial jobs, Wally mostly devoted herself to homemaking. Her cooking and baking skills in particular were legendary. Following George s retirement from the Air Force in 1972, George and Wally moved to Western Montana and within a year had purchased a home in the Mission Valley. This gave Wally the perfect opportunity to indulge her love of flowers and plants. For many years her gardens and greenhouse were the floral showcase of the Mission Valley. Wally also had a great love of animals. She always had a dog or two and donated generously to animal welfare and wildlife charities. When her health declined in 2003, Wally moved to the Flathead Valley, first to an assisted living facility and then joining her husband at the Montana Veterans Home, where she charmed the staff until her death on Nov. 20. Wally was a devoted wife and mother, a loving grandmother and a generous neighbor and friend. She will be loved, remembered and missed. The last few years she hasn't played much due to her health. She enjoyed sewing and making clothing. Many a Christmas you could expect a shirt or blouse that was made by her loving hands. She loved the outdoors; she enjoyed going out and picking huckleberries, June berries and wild berries of any kind. Her preserves were well known to most of the family and her grandson, Freddie, will miss his grandmother's pickle house. She enjoyed hunting and fishing with the guys. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Montana Accordion Association. Irma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; and nine brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son, John Mueller, and wife, Audrey, of Kalispell; one grandson, Fred Mueller; and one great-granddaughter, Melissa Lime; one brother, Ray Ingram, and wife, Doris; one sister-in-law, Ester Ingram; with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial services for Irma will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at the Salvation Army Chapel, 110 Bountiful Lane, Kalispell (up by the hospital), with Maj. Steve Sveneson officiating. Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for Irma's family. You are invited to go to www.jgfuneralhome.com to view Irma's guest book, offer condolences and share memories.

Edna B. Kelch, 91
November 25, 2009 5:11 a.m.

Edna B. Kelch, 91

Edna B. Kelch, 91, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center in Kalispell. She was born on April 10, 1918, in Galata, the daughter of Martin and Bertha (Wollan) Dukleth. As a small child her family moved to the Badrock area south of Columbia Falls. She attended grade school at Badrock and Columbia Falls, until her senior year in high school when the family moved to their log house at the entrance of Tally Lake. She graduated from Flathead County High School in 1937. Edna met and married Everett Kelch in the summer of 1937. Together they built a home near her parents and farmed and cleared the land. They had their first three children, Ellen, Larry Dean and John. World War II began and the family moved to Seattle to work, making things for the war effort. Their son John passed away at nine months, so Edna put their two children in daycare and went to work as a drill press operator. After the war, the family moved back to the Flathead to their home in the Bissell community. Edna and Everett had three more children, Lloyd, Sherry and Robert Bob. The family farmed, milking cows and sold the cream to the Equity supply as ice cream. They fed the milk to the calves and pigs. In the fall of each year they would cut Christmas trees. Edna baked bread, cakes, cookies and pies and enjoyed cooking large dinners. She also canned fruit and had a large garden every year. We were always fishing and she loved the fresh trout. Edna was always proud of the fact her children all graduated from high school. In 1969, she and Everett divorced and she went to work at the Viking Lodge in Whitefish as a housekeeper for about 15 years. She later went to work at the Snowline Tree Company, where she made wreaths and Christmas rope. While working at the Viking, she also started a love for china painting and made many plates, dishes and cups. She stayed on the farm where she fed the cows in the winter and cut hay in the summer. Edna sold the farm in 1992 and moved to Lake Blaine to be near her daughter, Sherry. She kept her garden and also had a flower garden. She belonged to the Stillwater Grange, Bissell Home Demonstration Group and also volunteered with 4-H projects. She loved to have you come for a visit for a short time and then she d say, You go home now and take that dog with you. Edna moved to Renaissance Assisted Living in October 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Owen Bud Dukleth and William Bill Dukleth, and their wives; one grandson, Jason Madsen; three sons, Larry Dean Kelch and Robert Bob Kelch, and infant son, John Kelch; and son-in-law, Dave Creighton. She is survived by two daughters, Ellen Creighton, and Sherry Madsen and husband, Gerald, both of Kalispell; son, Lloyd Kelch, and wife, Marcia, of Columbia Falls; daughter-in-law, Evelyn Kelch, of Polson; 17 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Edna will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Tim Bartholomew officiating. Burial will follow at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery. Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for Edna s family. You are invited to go to www.jgfuneralhome.com to view Edna s guest book, offer condolences and share memories.

Betty Fay DeVall Brown, 86
November 22, 2009 5:11 a.m.

Betty Fay DeVall Brown, 86

On Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at the age of 86, Betty Fay Brown peacefully passed into eternity at her home on Whitefish Lake in Whitefish. Her son, Dr. Richard Brown, and her daughter, Gail Blakeley, held her in their arms as the Lord opened heaven s gate to receive her spirit in perfect time, according to His will. Betty was born (Oct. 19, 1923), raised, and lived her entire life in Whitefish. She was proud of her Whitefish roots and appreciated her hometown s beauty and the quality of life it offered. She sported a Whitefish Native license plate holder on her Subaru, advertising what few residents of the area can honestly claim, a long-term and historic tie to the community she loved. One of eight children, Betty was the youngest child. She attended grade school and high school in Whitefish. Summer days would find her and her siblings walking the boardwalk through downtown on their way to the lake, where they would spend all day swimming. Hiking west down the railroad tracks to Beaver Bay, she and her brothers and sister would pick and sell huckleberries to earn money for school clothes. A gallon of berries fetched a dollar. A dollar bought three cotton dresses from J.C. Penney. It must have been her beautiful red hair that first caught Glen Brown s eye. Barely 18, she married Glen on Dec. 25, 1941. Times were tough; economic depression and war gripped the country. Rather than go to war, Glen was given a deferment to raise hogs and farm with the help of his new bride Betty. Leaving the relative comforts of city life in Whitefish and being more than a bit naive, she found herself thrust into domestic action. A novice cook, she toiled over a blazing hot wood cook stove, preparing hearty meals for hard-working men and her family. No indoor plumbing meant the outhouse was the only bathroom option, even at 20 below zero. Betty bore her first child, a boy, Richard Brown, within a year of being married. A daughter, Gail Brown, soon followed. She and Glen farmed the Henry Good Ranch on Whitefish Stage Road from 1943 through 1951. From 51 through 55, Betty owned and managed Bonnie s Dress Shop on Central Avenue in Whitefish. Her third and final child, Robert Brown, was born in 1954 while she was still working her dress shop. After selling the business in 1955, she worked at the Toggery for a couple years. Betty tagged and graded trees for her husband in their Brown Brothers Christmas Trees yard, shipping as many as 49 rail loads of trees in a single season to different parts of the country. Having honed her cooking skills on the farm, she found courage to sell cookies and coffee cakes at the Whitefish Farm Women s Market to earn pin money. Her baked goods were a big hit, and so she found one of her life s callings, to be a cook and baker. Aside from her duties as a wife and mother, Betty enjoyed an active social life. For 43 years she played on a women s golf team in Whitefish. She also loved her bowling team buddies. She was a lifetime active member of the Whitefish Methodist Church and dearly loved her church family. A member of the Moose Lodge, she enjoyed the camaraderie of friends and lodge events. She found great joy in blessing others with her culinary creations. You d see her bringing walnut fudge to the voting precinct workers or dropping a peanut butter chocolate cream pie by the hair salon where she d get her hair done. Late summer was Transparent Apple and huckleberry season, so you might get lucky and have one of Betty s pies show up at your door. She d frequently say, Just leave me in my kitchen and I ll be happy. Betty leaves behind a family that loved her deeply, mourns her passing with great sorrow and remembers the joy, provision and sincere caring that characterized her love of family. Preceded in death by her husband and youngest son, she s survived by her oldest son, Dr. Richard Brown, and his wife, Margy; daughter, Gail Blakeley; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; brother, William DeVall, and his wife, Eva; sister-in-law, Clara DeVall; and numerous nieces and nephews. Betty s legacy is one of great love and care for family. Her children and grandchildren were her world, a focus of constant concern, interest, support and provision. Her beautiful yet modest lake home with her residing there was a mooring point for us all, a seemingly constant safe harbor in the ever-shifting sands of life. She and her home were a place of natural beauty, peace, rest, fun, encouragement, sage advice and togetherness. We remember Betty Fay Brown, our mother, our grandmother, our friend as a generous giver of self. Oh, how we will miss you more than mere words could ever describe! Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at the United Methodist Church of Whitefish, with a reception to follow at the Whitefish Moose Lodge. Betty requested that donations be made to Wings, a cancer support group that helps cancer patients and their families cover the cost of cancer treatment-related travel expenses. Donations can be made in care of Wings Regional Cancer Support, P.O. Box 7852, Kalispell, MT 59901. Austin Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Robert W. Johnson, 87
November 20, 2009 5:11 a.m.

Robert W. Johnson, 87

Robert W. Johnson, 87, stepfather of Valerie McKenzie, a resident of Kalispell, died Nov. 6, 2009, at Miller s Manor in Logansport, Ind., after a long struggle with dementia. Dr. Johnson was born in Denver on Dec. 23, 1921, to Ernest Johnson and Edith Glassford Johnson. He was raised in Lake Forest, Ill., where his father, an economist, served for many years as president of Lake Forest College. Dr. Johnson graduated from Lake Forest Academy and attended Oberlin College until his senior year, when he bolted and joined the Navy, hoping to be a Navy pilot. A diagnosis of color-blindness dashed that and he found himself commissioned as an ensign on a Navy supply ship in the South Pacific. He felt blessed because his base was in beautiful New Zealand and the cargo was usually mutton and cabbage, items that interested neither the enemy nor, unfortunately, the Allied troops. After World War II, he returned to earn a Master of Business Administration with Distinction degree in 1946 from Harvard University and his doctorate in finance from Northwestern University in 1952. While on the faculty at the University of Buffalo, Dr. Johnson wrote the textbook that he wanted as a teacher and could not find elsewhere, and presented the manuscript to a publisher, fait accompli. Financial Management was a groundbreaking and highly successful textbook, widely regarded as a catalyst for changing the way corporate finance was taught in business schools. In 1970, he joined other professors of finance to form the Financial Management Association and was elected its first president. His research interests began with his dissertation on consumer credit, and he continued with that interest for the rest of his working life. He served as reporter-economist in the drafting of the Uniform Consumer Credit Code and as a presidential appointee on the National Commission on Consumer Finance. He founded the Credit Research Center in 1974 and served as its director for many years. The Center s numerous publications and research focused on the effects of public policies on the cost and availability of consumer credit and Dr. Johnson testified frequently on these issues before legislative committees at the state and federal levels. Dr. Johnson joined the faculty of the Krannert Graduate School of Management at Purdue University in 1964, where he remained until his retirement in 1997. In 2000, Purdue University honored him with an honorary degree of Doctor of Management, in recognition of his distinguished career in credit research and excellence as a teacher and mentor. He is survived by his wife, Dixie Porter Johnson, of Chicago; his stepdaughter, Valerie McKenzie, of Kalispell; and two daughters from a previous marriage, Judith Plows of New York City, and Cynthia Gaa of Willis, Texas. A memorial service will be held in West Lafayette, Ind., after the holidays.

George Ravetto, 51

After a courageous battle with cancer, George Ravetto passed from this world and into the next on Nov. 16, 2009, while surrounded by family and friends. Born on Nov. 1, 1958, in Prescott, Ariz., George was a lover of life and family. George spent his young adult life enjoying the company of family and friends in his childhood home of Prescott. After marrying Sandra, his wife of 24 years, he raised three exceptional children, Cory, Dayton and Jaryn. If you were to ask George what he was most proud of, he would surely say his wife and children. The Ravetto family moved to Montana in 1993 to enjoy the splendors of the Montana countryside. Whether he was taking a hike in the mountains, or building the house of his dreams for his family, George was at home here in the Flathead Valley. George s generous nature left a lasting impression on all who met him. Whether he was helping a neighbor with a project or providing everything he could for his family, George always thought of others before himself. Alan Trigg Thompson, 86
November 17, 2009 5:11 a.m.

Alan Trigg Thompson, 86

Grandpa Alan made his final transition while under our watchful eyes on the ninth of November, 2009. He was born to Joseph and Ovidia Thompson in Crary, N.D., on Oct. 8, 1923. In 1941, he graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Wash., and would later join the Army Air Corps in 1943. Grandpa served his country as a pilot of the B-25 during World War II and upon completion of his duties, married the love of his life, Garnett Butterfield, with whom he shared 63 rich and wonderful years. Alan went to work for the Pacific Telephone Company in Seattle, and later relocated to Los Angeles, where he and Garnett raised their two children, Terry and Janine. After 30 years with Pacific Telephone, Alan retired to a life full of activity and time with friends. He and his wife took up residence on Catalina Island, where he expanded his time commitment to a Christian bookstore, art, photography, writing, inventing and astronomy. Garnett and Alan tremendously enjoyed their time on Catalina and are woven into the fabric of the island to this day. One more move, however, would bring them to their final destination in Whitefish. While living in Whitefish, Alan established numerous friendships and continued to dedicate himself not only to his wife, but to his hobbies and grandchildren. He collected stamps and edited video, enjoyed gold panning and fly fishing, photographed Glacier Park and continued to write. Alan was a man of many talents, though his primary focus always rested on his family. He exuded a quiet peace and kind disposition. As a patient teacher, Alan freely gave himself to all those around him in many positive forms. He is currently in the company of God, his wife, Garnett; one brother and sister; and both parents. He leaves behind his daughter, Janine Perry, of Martin City; son, Terry Thompson, of San Diego; grandchildren, Todd and Brian Thompson of Seattle and Columbus, Ohio, and Heidi and Zachary Perry of the Flathead Valley; and three great-grandchildren. Be at peace, Grandpa, be with God, and be with us until we all come together once more.

Candace Marie (Garlitz) Howell, 44
November 17, 2009 5:11 a.m.

Candace Marie (Garlitz) Howell, 44

Candace Howell, 44, died peacefully Nov. 12, 2009, after a determined and courageous battle with breast cancer. A third generation Whitefish native, Candace was born July 21, 1965, the eldest daughter of John Jack and Phyllis Garlitz. A 1983 graduate of Whitefish High School, she went on to graduate from the University of Montana where she met her best friend and future husband, Stuart Howell, originally from Houston. In March of 1991, two beautiful premature babies were born into their family: Alec W. and Devon J. There were so many reasons their babies should not survive, but together Candace and Stuart made a formidable team and their boys came home in August of that year. Sadly, Devon Jon preceded Candace in death just before his 4th birthday. Candace was also preceded in death by grandparents, Louise and Leroy Strunk, and Alta Thompson; uncle, James Garlitz; and brother-in-law, Richard Dean. Once she knew the battle she faced she stated, I have cancer but it doesn t have me! If the doctors have something to report, I ll be out riding my bike! Up until recently, she lived each day to the fullest. She was determined to see Alec graduate from high school in 2010, but her body betrayed her. She believed she was a spiritual being, having a human existence; difficult as it was, she knew her life consisted of so many more blessings than trials. Throughout her treatment she met so many people who inspired her and took inspiration from her. More than once people approached her mother and said, I don t know your daughter well but I love and admire her positive attitude and great spirit. Candace is survived by her husband, Stuart; son, Alec; parents, Jack and Phyllis Garlitz; and sister, Capt. Cindy Dean (U.S. Army); uncles, Charles, and Robin, Strunk of St. Helens, Ore., and Rodney, and Candace, Strunk of Columbia Falls; aunt, Hazel Van Dessel, and Robert, of Joplin; Stuart s parents and siblings, William and Patricia Howell of Gold Canyon, Ariz., sisters, Karen Toomey, and Ray, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Carol Sevier, and William, of The Hague, Netherlands, and brother, Steven Howell, and Toni, of Washington, D.C. Candace also leaves special friends, Jennifer Havens, Zana Faulkner, Sandy Schott, Darrell Johnson, and numerous other family members and friends. A celebration of her life will be held 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Whitefish Moose Home, 230 W. 10th St. Those wishing to remember Candace may send memorials to Alec s college account at the Whitefish Credit Union or to Hospice of Kalispell. The family wishes to thank the many special angels who have stood with them throughout Candace s illness and are eternally grateful. Austin Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Richard C. Hoefle, 85
November 12, 2009 5:11 a.m.

Richard C. Hoefle, 85

Richard C. Hoefle Dick, Hef, beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, gave up his race through life on Nov. 10, 2009, surrounded by family. Dick lived each day of his life fully and ran his race hard until the finish line. A veteran of World War II, he was welcomed into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, fittingly on Veterans Day. He celebrated his 85th birthday in September, at the family cabin on Whitefish Lake, where he toured the valley in a helicopter, a surprise gift from his sons, which has now become one that everyone cherishes. Dick was born on Sept. 12, 1924, in Seattle, the eldest son of Clarence and Anne Hoefle. He grew up in Highland, Ill., and San Diego. He enrolled in the Navy and served as a naval officer on the ship LST 1129 by the time he was 20. He loved his Navy experience, made lifelong friends and claimed that he d return in a heartbeat if ever given the opportunity. After his Navy years, Dick worked in several different national parks including Glacier, Yosemite and Yellowstone, working as a waiter in hotels, rewiring lookout tours and later as a ranger. He and his brother learned the art of tray spinning and spent many hours entertaining customers, and later friends and family with this talent! Dick graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a degree in chemistry. After graduation, he and lifelong friend, Bob Scott, went to Snider, Texas, to make their fortune in the oil business. They roughnecked for three months, decided they d had enough and settled in Casper, Wyo., working for Shell Oil. There he began his 60-year career in the oil industry and found the love of his life, Jan Osborne. They were married in Billings on Oct. 10, 1953, and made Billings their home for the remainder of their lives. To this union were born four sons, Steven, Stuart, Charlie and Dick. Some of Dick s most favorite memories were the vacations he took with his wife and boys, skiing and staying at the Red Lodge house and fishing on the Baja and in Alaska. Dick loved the adventure of the oil business, putting yellow on the map, drilling wells, waiting on logs and unfortunately, sometimes plugging them. He was proud of the fact that both Stu and Charlie and two grandsons also pursued careers in the oil and gas industry. Hef was a stern father, who believed in discipline, family comes first and you need to work hard to play hard. He was his sons , and later his grandchildren s champion and always encouraged each of them to be whatever they wanted to be, that setbacks are things to adjust to, and quitting is for quitters! Nothing pleased Dick more than time at the cabin and time spent with family. He cherished the summers spent there with Jan and looked forward to visits from the kids and grandkids. For years, spring and fall days found Hef with a fishing pole in hand, floating either the Big Horn or Yellowstone River with one or more of his sons. He loved to hunt elk, deer, ducks, geese and pheasants and taught his sons and grandsons to love the sport as well. With both Stu and Charlie s families in Billings, Dick took an active role in their lives and relished time spent in their homes, especially holidays. In his later years, Hef wintered in Carlsbad Calif., with Jan, to be near son, Dick, where they took a special interest in the kids that Dick coaches. He continued the tradition of summering in Whitefish, leaning more heavily on Steve, with each passing year, for support and companionship. He loved his wife and each of his sons and their families with all his heart. Dick is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jan; and his sons, Steve and Betty, Stu and Cyd, Charlie and Kristi, and Dick and Kim; five grandsons, six granddaughters, and nine great-grandchildren; his sister, Carol Collins; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Stuart; and grandson, Brady. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at Faith Chapel, where Dick worshiped, followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Montana Rescue Mission. Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary has charge of arrangements. Remembrances may be shared with the family by visiting www.michelottisawyers.com.

Wayne S. Sakariason
November 9, 2009 5:11 a.m.

Wayne S. Sakariason

Wayne S. Sakariason, a lifelong resident of Kalispell, died at home Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, of natural causes. Wayne was born July 7, 1930, to William and Myrtle Sakariason. He was the eldest of their three children. At 14 he struck out on his own, hitchhiking to Seattle with in his pocket. He talked the owner of a boarding house into postponing the collection of his rent for one week, found a job and acquired work habits and business skills that served him a lifetime. Wayne worked for Mountain Tractor for 19 years and then purchased the Kalispell Mountain Tractor dealership, which he ran for six more years. He sold that business and started Valley Equipment RV Sales in Evergreen, which gave him the opportunity to pass on his work ethic to his teenage son, who worked with him for several years. He ran Valley Equipment for 25 years until he sold out and retired in 1996. While on a sales call for Mountain Tractor to Montana Plywood in Whitefish, Wayne was introduced to a pretty, young secretary in their office. Her name was Amanda Mattson, and he said the second he set eyes on her, he knew she was the one for him but it took a little longer to convince her. They were married for 37 happy years, raising their two children, attending antique auctions and scouring antique shops across the United States, and turning their home and property on Woodland Hill into a showplace. It was there they welcomed their grandson, Dakota, who lived with them and brought much love and laughter into their lives. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Roger Sakariason (formerly of Kalispell), and Marvin Sakariason (formerly of Yuma, Ariz.); his beloved wife, Amanda Sakariason; and his favorite aunt, Dagney Nelson (formerly of Kalispell). He is survived by his son, Terry Sakariason, and wife, Joy; daughter, Sheri Sakariason, and number one grandson, Dakota Sakariason, and granddaughter, Kendall, and daughters, Charlene, Denise and Susan, all of Kalispell. Patsy Wagner, his loving companion of the last four years, his significant other, as he teasingly called her, also survives him at their home in Kalispell. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public services. Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be laid to rest next to his wife, Amanda, at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery. Friends are encouraged to visit the Web site at www.buffalohillfh.com to leave condolences for the family. Buffalo Hill Funeral Home is caring for the family.

Perry Lamond Van Orden, 53

Perry Lamond Van Orden passed away at home on Nov. 3, 2009, at the age of 53. Perry was born in Dillon to the parents of Ramond Merrill Van Orden and Frances Jean Holt on Aug. 15, 1956. He grew up in Kalispell and graduated from high school in Belle Fourche, S.D. He attended San Jacinto College in Houston. Perry served in the U.S. Air Force from 1975 to 1980 and separated honorably with the rank of staff sergeant. He served on tours overseas at Kaiserslautern Air Base in Germany and stateside at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Miss. Upon completion of his military service, Perry moved to Houston, where he had resided ever since. Perry s career involved providing information technology services at notable companies in Houston, including Shell Oil, American General, and most recently Texas Children s Hospital, where he installed and supported medical information systems. Perry was well-respected by his co-workers and managers as a person who could get things done, yet always had a zest for making the office an enjoyable place to work. Last spring Perry trained and rode in the challenging MS-150 bike ride from Houston to Austin with fellow employees at Texas Children s Hospital to raise money for multiple sclerosis research. Perry was preceded in death by his parents, Ramond Van Orden and Jean Holt; one brother, Daniel Widdos; and a nephew, Chauncy Shields. His survivors include his life partner, Jeff Mogyrody, of 20 years; seven siblings, including brother Bobby Widdos, brother Montie Len Van Orden, sister Pamela Jean Van Orden, brother Martin Allen Van Orden and wife Lisa, sister Catherine Ann Wright and husband Roy, sister Melanie Rae Delamata and husband Mark, and brother Marvin Lloyd Sage and wife Shaw Blanchard; and many loving nieces and nephews. Perry and his partner Jeff were active members of the International Billiards League for which Perry served as chapter president. He was an avid traveler and often planned entire itineraries around visiting family and friends who lived around the country. Whether on the road or back home in Houston, Perry was never one to miss out on attending a wide variety of performances and concerts, ranging from rock-and-roll to opera, to Broadway Theater productions. A member of Perry s immediate family had this to say: Perry was the most loving and giving person. He would have taken care of the world if he could have. When there were problems in the family, he would always give the best advice even if we didn t like it. We knew he was thinking of everyone s best interest. When we had family affairs, Perry orchestrated everything so things went smoothly. If things got out of hand, he would calm everyone down so things would be OK. The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, followed by services at 3 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, in Houston.

Richard W. Waldt Jr., 85
November 6, 2009 5:11 a.m.

Richard W. Waldt Jr., 85

Richard W. Waldt Jr., passed away peacefully on Nov. 3, 2009, after an extended illness. He was born on July 18, 1924, in Washington, D.C., to Richard W. Waldt and Ingrid A. Waldt. He had a twin brother, Roy, and two sisters, Ingrid and Grace. He met his wife and lifelong true love, Lucia H. Stutzenberger, while serving in post-World War II Germany. They were married on Aug. 30, 1948, and had three children over the years, Richard R., Ralph W. and Robin L. They in turn gave him six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941, and served with the Army Air Corps and later the U.S. Air Force for 30 years, ending his distinguished career on April 1, 1971. He served during the war in the Pacific Theater and in Europe. His service took him to several postings in Germany, and to various stateside postings, with the last assignment being Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls. After retirement, he continued to work in Great Falls, but moved the family to Whitefish in June 1972, after falling in love with the Flathead during a summer visit the previous year. He worked in various capacities in the area, among which were the local Chevrolet dealership, Burlington Northern, and finally 11 years at Plum Creek, after which he fully retired. At the time of his death he resided in Brendan House in Kalispell, where he had lived for seven years. It seems that everyone who knew him well, whether through work, friends or family, loved and respected him. Richard loved his family fiercely, and was happiest spending time with them. He and Lucia loved country music, and for a time were a fixture on the dance floor at the Blue Moon, again known and loved by all. Richard had a wonderful sense of humor, and when he laughed, everyone laughed with him. Those who knew him would tell you that he was a simple, humble, quiet man of the highest integrity. His dedication to Lucia was legendary. Truly for his family he was our hero, and the finest man we have ever known. We will dearly miss him. Ena Louise Keating Baldwin, 74
November 4, 2009 5:11 a.m.

Ena Louise Keating Baldwin, 74

Our mother, sister, grandmother and our friend, Ena Louise Keating Baldwin, sailed away to her new life on Oct. 28, 2009. Ena was born in Ontario to Fred and Lulu Keating. She was welcomed to her farm home by sisters, Ellen, Ruby, Beatrice, Norma and Elva, and brothers, Ralph and Lawrence. Before long, brothers Orland and Vernon were born, making the number of children 10! What a family! Ena s first job was with the Bell Telephone Co. After several years she left her home country and moved to Houston, where she became a ballroom dancing teacher with Fred Astaire Studios. She even danced with the man himself! There she met and married her husband, Harold Baldwin. Her daughter Leisa was born in Houston. Ena and Harold left the dance business after Leisa was born and they traveled extensively with Harold s new company. At one of their stops along the way, a second daughter, Leslie, was born. Ena s next career was at Topeka Medical Center in the pediatric department. Ena enjoyed many varied careers throughout her life. She became a furniture salesman and interior designer in Denver and then went on to open three women s consignment clothing stores; the first one in Coeur d Alene, Idaho, and then the last, and her favorite, Ena s Reflection, in Kalispell. She never really retired until she sold the business in 2003. Finding retirement difficult, she found she needed a new challenge, so she joined the Foster Grandparent Program and was Grandma Ena at Elrod School for several years. Ena loved life. She loved her children and grandchildren and her brothers and sisters. Her physical presence will be sorely missed, but her spirit and wisdom will remain. She will continue to teach, inspire, motivate and amuse every person who remembers this most remarkable woman. She is survived by her daughters, Leisa and Leslie; grandchildren, Desiree, Eli and Clayton; great-grandchildren, Tristan, Vanessa and Christopher; brothers, Orland and Vernon; sisters, Norma and Beatrice; and oodles of wonderful nieces and nephews. A private family celebration will be held. Cards and remembrances can be sent to P.O. Box 1262, Kalispell, MT 59903.

Gerald W. Leighton, 86
November 3, 2009 5:11 a.m.

Gerald W. Leighton, 86

Gerald W. Leighton, 86, of Ronan, passed away peacefully at St. Luke Community Hospital on Oct. 28, 2009. He was born March 16, 1923, in Wibaux and at the age of six and a half months arrived at Ravalli and then made Ronan his home for 86 years. He was drafted into the service on March 3, 1943, and was a staff sergeant of the F Company, 143rd Infantry, 2nd Battalion, 36th Division of the Texas National Guard. He was wounded twice and received the Silver Star, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the combat infantry badge and a good conduct metal. Gerald worked at the Ronan State Bank as a janitor prior to going into the service, and after World War II he resumed working at the bank. He attended the University of Montana and graduated from Pacific Coast Banking School in Seattle. Over 68 years, he continued to work his way up from cashier to executive vice president and a member of the board of directors. Gerald was very active in the community, serving for both the City Council and the Lake County Airport board as clerk; a board member for the Round Butte Water Company; and local president and state treasurer for Saddle Club. The 777 Ranch and raising Angus cattle kept him busy until his retirement several years ago due to ill health. Gerald enjoyed the great outdoors. The yearly trips into the Bob Marshall to hunt, fish, camp and just explore the mountains on horseback gave him much pleasure. It was a mighty happy (and surprising) day when the Leighton Road sign, named after him, went up and he had great pride in pointing it out. Gerald was predeceased by son, Jimmy; parents RZ and Loula; brother, Tip; and sisters, Marie, Louella and Anita. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jeanne; son, Dennis, and Heather, of Seattle; daughter, Nicola, and Tim, of Kalispell; brother, Alvia, and Florence, of Kalispell; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. We are thankful for the years that we had with him and he will be greatly missed. Services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 4, with viewings today from 3 to 6 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Shrider-Thompson Funeral Home. Military graveside services will be at 1 p.m. at the Ronan Cemetery, with a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. at the Ronan Community Center and a reception immediately following.
