LETTER: Some thoughts about the bypass
Celebration of the 93 bypass completion is a salute to patience and foresight. LETTER: Senator endorses auditor candidate
I’ve seen a lot of good leaders come and go over the past two decades in both the Montana Legislature and in the U.S. Senate. Jesse Laslovich has always been at the top. Hillary Clinton smugly touts that she defends toddlers and women while supporting Planned Parenthood, which rips babies from the safety of their mothers’ wombs and sells their body parts. She laughs about this. And our tax dollars pay for this holocaust upon the innocent of the most innocent! How barbaric, brutal and vulgar have we become?

LETTER: Bylaws against political signs are illegal; can I have mine back?
Cities, counties and homeowner associations attempt placing limits on political signs by restricting timelines or banning them altogether. The courts have already addressed the unconstitutionality of timelines while the Montana Legislature took up the issue of HOA bylaws a few years ago.
LETTER: Gianforte is too conservative for Montana
Who is Greg Gianforte?
LETTER: GOP elites help Clinton more than Trump
The Republican National Committee and GOP have no desire to help get Trump elected. The Bush family willing to support Hillary is a clear message to that.
LETTER: Don't trust politicians who kowtow to D.C.
Media ads are showing Bullock as some “champion” of Montana. Yet, he declared a month or so ago, that he has to do what Obama wants and what D.C. wants — specifically, “you must take refugees I send you.” Well, he is simple wrong, and he is lying, and he knows it. As does anyone who can READ.
LETTER: Vote for Trump if you want real change
I watched the first two presidential debates. It appears that Clinton and the media are blasting Trump for trivial statements that he has made. They seem to overlook the fact that Clinton’s inaction resulted in the deaths of four people and that her use of personal emails put the entire country at risk. Also the FBI report is a whitewash job and is phony as a three-dollar bill. Instead they concentrate on some inappropriate things that Trump said years ago. So he may have offended a few people, but is that such a big deal compared to what Clinton did?
LETTER: Breckenridge well-qualified to serve in Congress
The election this year has made me shudder for what our future looks like in Montana. Our liberty is being threatened by many candidates on both sides of the line.
LETTER: Vote yes on I-182 and help people with extreme pain
Every election is important, especially this one. Particularly for us who suffer from extreme pain from cancer, the vertebrae (back) or veterans from post traumatic stress disorder.
LETTER: Johanna Clark for a fresh start in Lake County
This election season I’ve noticed something quite interesting while driving the roads of Lake County, Montana. You can’t help but notice the large number of fancy designer John Fleming political signs standing in front of some of the larger acreages and homes in the area. Contrast that with the handmade signs standing in testimony for Johanna Clark, made with great effort, determination, and concern for the direction our state is headed.
LETTER: GOP candidates will bring us down
Donald Trump, Ryan Zinke and Greg Gianforte are not people that will help America be great. They are only concerned about themselves. They will not help this country move forward in any way. I have studied their policies and professions. They do not promote good will for people in this country. I have watched all of this unfold for the last year. Donald is in this for himself. Ryan is in this for himself. Greg is in this for himself. Please do not elect these people. They will only bring us down. Not up. —
Supreme Court justice defends Juras against religious attack
I have known Kristen Juras for a long time. Born and raised in Montana, Juras practiced law for many years and has a broad range of legal experience. She taught extensively at the University of Montana Law School, has a keen intellect, and would bring to the court new expertise in multiple areas of the law, including family law, taxation, property, and, critically, water law, which is a growing part of the Supreme Court’s caseload and a critical issue to Montana’s future.
Is Juras violating code of judicial conduct?
Montana Supreme Court candidate Kristen Juras has accused her opponent Dirk Sandefur of violating Montana’s code of judicial conduct. Since I helped write it, I know bit about this code. It covers not only sitting judges and justices, but also candidates for judicial office.
Law school prof backs Juras
This November we have the opportunity to elect a Montana Supreme Court candidate with unparalleled qualifications. Kristen Juras was raised on a Montana ranch and has taught agricultural law, so she understands the issues facing farmers and ranchers.
OPINION: Gianforte's history proves he doesn't support discrimination
Greg Gianforte successfully built and grew a business that employed hundreds of Montanans. Thanks to his hard work and dedication, he proved that a world-class business could be built in Montana. The spark of RightNow Technologies ignited Montana’s growing high-tech sector. Many Montanans have benefited directly or indirectly from what RightNow Technologies accomplished here.
Judges come to Sandefur's defense over sentencing
Canon No. 1, of the Montana Code of Judicial Conduct, states: “A judge shall uphold and protect the independence, integrity and impartiality of the judiciary, and shall avoid impropriety and the appearance of impropriety.”
Attack mailer unfair to Sandefur
Last week, our home received another political mailing. Nothing different about that in this political season, except the mailing came from Jake Eaton, “Treasurer of STOP SET EM FREE SANDEFUR” in Billings, Montana. In my opinion, the mailing borders (if it doesn’t cross over) the line into libel.
Sandefur stands for fairness
Judge Dirk Sandefur is an honest, down-to-earth Montanan who has proven his mettle. In his 14 years as a district judge in Great Falls, he has earned a reputation for deciding cases based solely on the law and the Constitution — never on personal politics or interests.
Former U.S. attorney worried about Sandefur's sentencing
I am supporting Kristen Juras for the Montana Supreme Court for a number of reasons. One of them is her opponent’s record on sentencing defendants convicted in criminal cases involving possession of child pornography and other offenses with children as the intended victims.
OPINION: Auditor seeks your vote for secretary of state
I’m a Montanan and believe that when Montanans come together we do better by one another.
OPINION: Supreme Fight - Airing the issues in the battle for the court
Juras best candidate for Supreme Court
When considering those running for a seat on the Montana Supreme Court, I have concluded the most experienced and best candidate is Kristen Juras. Most importantly, she is fair, honest, knowledgeable, and constitutionally sound. These are the traits needed in these complex times.

COLUMN: Dishonest media 101: 'Your bias is showing'

LETTER: Nervous about Gianforte
Here’s why Greg Gianforte concerns me.
LETTER: Don't trust the GOP
“Make Montana great” … “Vote Republican — it’s less taxing” … Rinse and repeat ...
OPINION: Why I'm running for the Montana Supreme Court
Our Montana Supreme Court is the last stop for deciding the most important legal questions in Montana. It’s important we get those right — not just for the parties involved in a particular case, but for anyone else, present or future, who will be affected by the precedent that case sets.
LETTER: Supreme Court crucial
The critical issue of the next president appointing two to five justices to the U.S. Supreme Court has not received as much attention as it should have. We need to have justices who uphold their oath to rule according to the U.S. Constitution.

OPINION: High-tech wiz says media taking low road against Gianforte
As I read the Oct. 3 Billings Gazette editorial entitled “Gianforte’s jobs pitch may be a curveball,” I instantly recognized it was a planted story by Bullock’s campaign. The subsequent advertising campaign by Bullock confirmed my assumption. Further, the deluge of recent Wikileaks releases lay bare the widespread collaboration between American media and the Clinton campaign. This is how the media and campaigns operate.

LETTER: Gianforte is right man to be governor
Rarely do we have an opportunity to have someone in the governor’s mansion with the unique skills that Greg Gianforte possesses. In a recent opinion piece I wrote, I discussed the demise of good, working-class families. Salvaging our working class is critical to our economic future. The most crucial race this fall impacting Montana families is the governor’s race.
LETTER: Skees not right for District 11
Derek Skees does not represent District 11! He was one of the outspoken speakers at the recent Flathead Chapter of Act for America. This organization states they are “rising in defense of our security, our liberty, and our values.” This organization is arguing that Islam is being taught in public school curriculum and textbooks. Derek Skees is in support of an organization that I consider one of the biggest anti-Muslim hate groups operating in America today.
LETTER: Congratulations on new AOA county offices

LETTER: Re-elect Perry
Montana is known as one of the better-run states in the nation. One reason that’s true is because — unlike our federal Congress and the governments of many other states — our state Legislature has not yet been taken over by ideological extremists who refuse to work together on behalf of the people.
LETTER: Vote no on I-177
Of the initiatives to be included on Montana’s ballot in November, it is I-177 that most concerns me. Instead of seeking to expand out freedom as Montanans, it seeks to diminish it.
OPINION: Bullock's plan ensures future for Montana hunters
Montanans are hunters and anglers. It’s what we do. It’s how we fill our freezers, and some of the best time we spend all year with family and friends.
LETTER: I-177 is unwise
Nov. 8 is a very crucial voting date. Not only do we choose a new president, governor, and local government folks, BUT ... we also have a very emotional vote regarding trapping on our state lands.
LETTER: Did you hear the one about the Clown, the Crook and the Clod?
It is with such joy, assurance, and deep-seated national pride that we, the voting throng enter those hallowed, flag-draped booths, pencils in hand ... during this mellow time of domestic and global harmony .... to decide between the Clown and the Crook ... knowing fully well that the Clod, the third sinking boat in this Bermuda Triangle, owns 8 percent of the polling power, and can capsize the outcome ... and is incapable of naming one foreign dignitary, past or present.
LETTER: Standing up for Democrats
To any Flathead Democrats pondering the story on the front page of this paper last Sunday, Oct. 9, I’d like to offer reassurance that of the 10 legislative seats and one county commissioner seat on the ballot in our county, Democrats are fortunate to have seven engaged and hard-working candidates for the Legislature, plus a contender for the county commission. One of those seats, SD 6, is half in Lake County, and a Polson candidate, Rolf Harmsen, is running there. Lincoln County also has two committed and active candidates running in their two House districts —

LETTER: Gianforte will make great governor
Greg Gianforte’s analytical abilities, strong work ethic, and keen business sense make him the best candidate for Montana governor.
LETTER: Vote Rose for common sense
Taylor Rose wants security, and therefore a stringent refugee resettlement policy NOW. He also is a Second Amendment proponent, with respect for hunters and personal security. As a hunter and hiker he understands keeping access to public lands open and the need to control the wolf population.
Zinke needs more than his career as SEAL
I have followed the congressional career of Ryan “I’m a SEAL” Zinke with interest. As a combat veteran with 30 years of Regular Army service, I appreciate the fact that Mr. Zinke served his country in the Navy SEALs for roughly 22 years. He deserves recognition for that service, as he constantly reminds people. That does not make him an expert on military or foreign policy or veterans’ affairs.

LETTER: Mountain out of a molehill?
Kudos to Superintendent Rex Weltz of the Polson School District and Scott Wilson, Polson High School principal, whose assessment of the action of two students wearing inappropriate T-shirts for a homecoming event was sensible, immediate and published with no need for “further comment.” (All quotes are from the Daily Inter Lake, Saturday, Oct. 1, “‘White pride’ shirts prompt Polson protest.”)
LETTER: Shooting of lion made no sense
This letter is written simply to extend a sincere thank you and a deep appreciation to David Pauli for having taken the time and effort to write the Daily Inter Lake (Sept. 9) regarding the senseless shooting of the mountain lion in Whitefish on August 29.
LETTER: Speak up in face of evil
German pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote that “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. Not to speak is to speak.” Those are challenging words, especially in this strident election cycle. But how do we stay true to our conscience and speak without being drawn into partisanship? I’m not sure. However, when religion is politicized, the process becomes so toxic that Bonhoeffer’s words can not be ignored.
LETTER: Rangers are there to protect visitors AND wildlife
I am writing in response to the letter from the person who was putting down the park rangers at Glacier Park for scaring the bears off. The rangers are not there to ruin your experience at Glacier Park; they are there not only to protect the tourists, but also the bears and the other wildlife that reside there. That’s right — it is the home of the animals, not yours. Do you know or care what happens to a bear when it is no longer afraid of people, or it attacks someone? It pays with its life! It seems to me that is a pretty high price to pay for a photo. Maybe if you want a picture, you should go to a zoo. —

OPINION: Trump sign reveals 'deplorable train of thought'
Ron Erickson from Lakeside, in the Sept. 27 Daily Inter Lake, has proudly defended in painful, dictionary-definition, dog-comparison detail his deplorably misogynistic “Trump That B---h” sign, which is defiantly displayed alongside a public highway, crowded twice a day with women rushing back and forth to work, many juggling careers while transporting young and impressionable daughters and sons to and from a school where, theoretically, they are supposed to learn how to fit into society by developing critical people skills.

OPINION: A proud Democratic campaign button - and a stolen yard sign
As current president of the Flathead County Democratic Women, I am a proud wearer of a Hillary Clinton campaign button. I have been encouraged by the number of people stopping to say how happy they are to see my button and my support of Hillary. This happened at the farmers’ market, on the street, and even in the restaurants I have visited all this past week.

LETTER: How did reporters miss this big story?
I think our news reporters should be taken to court, charged with inciting trouble and riots. It seems they never have a story unless there is a colored person involved. They keep America divided, black or white, and when the trouble starts, they have a field day reporting what — in my opinion — the blacks are up to now. Does color really mean that much in America?
LETTER: Bob Brown is man of principle

LETTER: Restrict trapping
Stewart Edward White (1873-1946) was a famous sportsman and writer who hunted, camped and traveled in the North American wilderness, sometimes for months at a time. He was a good friend of President Theodore Roosevelt, who said White was “the best man with both rifle and pistol” who ever shot at Roosevelt’s rifle range. Major Townsend Whelan, in his book, “The American Rifle,” said White was “one of the best game shots in the world” But like many avid hunters, Stewart Edward White, had no use for steel traps. In his book, “Wild Geese Calling,” he writes, “But where Len — and John — thought only in terms of fur, and stopped at that, Sally saw too vividly a picture of a living creature, struggling, panting, broken-legged, wild with terror, held fast hour after hour, even day after day … Sudden clean death she could accept, for she was no sentimentalist. But to wake up, winter nights, and think of small, frantic, broken-legged, gnawing creatures, dying by inches in the snow!”

OPINION: More candidate lies versus the 'truth of God'
I have to admit I was a little disappointed with the first debate. I have to stop and ask myself, what was I hoping for? Trump is sort of like a Winston Churchill: rough, gruff, sort of redneck guy, authoritative, determined and even if unlikable to many, gets the job done. Those whose ire gets up at Trump might feel like the angry Lady Astor with Winston Churchill when she said to him: “Winston, if you were my husband, I’d put poison in your coffee.” Churchill snapped, “If you were my wife, I’d drink it.“

LETTER: There were better solutions for district
Here’s a thought I’ve yet to hear ... What about using the location where they want to build a new elementary school, but instead build a new Flathead High School which would solve the parking issues once and for all, not to mention other things and use the current Flathead High for several things such as the lower level as an elementary School and the upstairs for ALL of School District 5 administration, storing supplies, etc... That would free up rent money we’re paying for other locations.
LETTER: Invest in our students
Flathead Valley voters, I want to encourage you to vote yes for both the elementary and high school bonds.
LETTER: A 'yes' vote means you take pride in our community
I know there are members of the electorate who will oppose and express their displeasure about the upcoming bond election, regardless of the merits of the district’s request. Those people will tell you to vote no for a variety of reasons, most of which are unfounded. I get it.

LETTER: 'Yes' vote supports school activities
We would like to personally thank the gracious people of the Flathead Valley for their amazing support of schools and our activity programs.
Vote for Clinton, not 'next Hitler'
I am saddened and disillusioned that the country I was born into, the United States of America, is sliding down so far. The wildlife is always in danger of losing their habitat needed to survive and the entire planet is beginning a sixth mass extinction due to upcoming extreme climate change. Many of us give it only 50 more years, as we have gone past the point of no return. It will follow a non-linear mathematical function … perhaps as steep as an exponential curve.
Here's why I won't vote for Trump
I am an independent voter, and I’m NOT voting for Donald Trump. Here are just a few reasons why.
Is Clinton the right one to be first?
The upcoming presidential election features a special event. For the very first time, a female candidate is in the running to become president of the United States. The first person to accomplish anything that is deemed a great feat or achievement is guaranteed a featured role when history is recorded and passed on to future generations.
Here's why I want Trump
I know why I’m voting for Trump. It's Trump’s promise to withdraw — to tear up trade deals such as the North American Free Trade Agreement, throw up trade barriers against China, repudiate the Paris climate change agreement and the nuclear deal with Iran, and abdicate responsibility for the security of east Asia and Europe.
