Keeping an eye on university finances
Many Montanans don’t know that nonresident students subsidize the cost of our own children going to college. Legislators recognized this and wrote laws allowing the university system to waive nonresident tuition up to 2 percent of the previous year’s full-time enrollment numbers. Broken promises: What will our response be to Putin's Sudetenland?
In 1938 Adolf Hitler accused the Czechoslovakian government of maltreating German-speaking Czechs living in its area referred to as the “Sudetenland.” Seeking to avoid conflict, diplomatic efforts to deal with Hitler resulted in an agreement orchestrated by Neville Chamberlain of Great Britain to cede part of Czechoslovakia — without its consent — to Germany. The deal was agreed to by France along with the UK. Hitler saw diplomatic weakness and quickly moved his troops into the Sudetenland.

Equality for women ... in the Legislature
One hundred years ago in Montana a great discussion, as great as the state itself, was taking place. To the citizens of the state was put forth the idea that women should have the right to vote. The state had been in existence for 25 years, and the nation a century longer, yet women were considered less qualified than former slaves in having a say electing those to public office. By the end of Election Day 1914, the majority of men decided on the side of liberty and equality, and gave the women of the state the right to vote six years before it would become federal law. In the first election where women were allowed to vote, Montanans challenged themselves and the nation in revolutionary fashion by electing the first woman, Jeanette Rankin, to the U.S. Congress in 1916.
