Guide company receives 10-year extension for Glacier

Glacier Guides and Montana Raft, a West Glacier-based outdoor guiding and equipment rental company, has been awarded another 10-year contract to lead interpretive day hikes and backcountry guided trips in Glacier National Park. The company currently holds the contract, which was set to expire on the last day of 2018. The National Park Service announced the contract renewal for an additional ten years in a press release sent out this week.

They moved to Montana in 1976 and enjoyed the Flathead Valley and their final home. The couple was together for 58 years until Inge’s passing.

Lincoln County being hurt by state move

The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners wants to share our dismay with a recent decision by Montana Department of Environmental Quality and the governor’s office to file a violation against Hecla Mining under the “permit prohibition” provision of Montana Metal Mine Act. We support the Act’s provisions which holds mining operators responsible for cleanup and reclamation of their mining operations. However, we believe the state is misapplying the statute in this instance. Montana Code Annotated 82-4-360 states: “a person may not conduct mining or exploration activities in this state if that person or any firm or business association of which that person was a principal or controlling member had a bond forfeited under this part, if the department otherwise received proceeds from a surety to perform reclamation on that person’s behalf, or if the person’s surety completed reclamation on the person’s behalf.”

One would think that those who profess to love their country and to believe in the ideals upon which it was founded would be offended — and outraged — by the antics of Donald Trump, the vindictive and impulsive (a very dangerous combination!) demagogue posing as the 45th president of the United States. The man has brought shame and embarrassment to our country and has damaged long-time alliances, many going back 70 years. No one in my memory has shown greater contempt for our laws and our institutions than he. Instead of lifting us up and inspiring us to be the best we can be, he has contributed to the coarsening of our discourse, the lowering of our standards and the compromising of our values. Furthermore, on March 16, Gen. Barry McCaffrey — a 32-year veteran of the United States Army and the recipient of three Purple Hearts, two Silver Stars and two Distinguished Service Crosses — reluctantly concluded that the President is a “dangerous threat to the security of the United States.” Isn’t it time for the American people to say “enough is enough”?

Setting the facts straight about school levy request

On April 10, the Daily Inter Lake published a letter by Mark Agather entitled “Vote no on school bond.” I do not know Mr. Agather, but I respect him as a fellow citizen entitled to his opinion. Esther Ingram, 90

Esther Yvonne Ingram, age 90, passed away April 5, 2018 in Spokane Valley. Esther was born May 22, 1927 in Columbia Falls to parents Pearl and Bradford Leighty. Esther married James R. Ingram on Dec. 31, 1945. Esther loved to work in her garden, play cards with family and friends and volunteered many years at RSVP - Meals on Wheels. Esther enjoyed traveling. She had a bucket list which included seeing New York City, going on a cruise through the Panama Canal and cruising the Mississippi on a Paddle Wheel. She checked everything off her bucket list, enjoying them all with her daughters and friends.

Vern G. Seaman, 78

Vern George Seaman, age 78, of Kalispell passed away on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. Vern was born in Chinook, Montana to George and Esther. Vern went to Country School in Chinook and the family moved to Havre where Vern finished his schooling. Vern married Patty and to this union two sons were born, Garry and Mike. Vern started in the mobile home business in Great Falls, then moved to Kalispell and opened Seaman Mobile Home Sales. Vern and Patty ran a very successful business for several years. Vern became president of the Mobile Home Association and did it with great pride. Vern could park a big 16x80 mobile anywhere with such ease. No one knew more about this business than Vern. Vern and Patty were later divorced. Years later, Vern married his best friend.

James E. Strodtbeck, 85

Our father, our grandfather, our brother and our friend, James Edwin Strodtbeck, passed away April 11, 2018 in Glasgow. He is now at peace and pain-free as an angel high in the mountaintops of Montana. We were blessed to have “Jimmy” in our lives for 85 years and he touched the lives of so many across the Big Sky Country. He was a master with his hands as a stonemason for over 50 years, creating masterpieces throughout the states of Washington, Idaho and Montana. If he wasn’t building a stone wall, he was remodeling or building a house. He was a lover of nature and avid outdoorsman, always hunting, packing or fishing. He knew the mountains of Montana and could tell you some amazing stories of the woods. He was a master gardener and had a passion for growing the best flowers and vegetables. Most of all, Jim was one with a generous heart, helping and giving to all.

I have had the privilege of sitting on the Evergreen Fire and Rescue Department advisory board since January and learning about the challenges facing our firefighters, paramedics and EMTs. The facts are hard and complicated to fix, but not impossible if our community supports the department in a timely manner. The equipment is getting very old and well beyond recommended replacement standards. I learned engines age not only due to “driving miles” (odometer miles) but also “engine running miles” (example: stationary but still running at full throttle to pump water). Out of 14 listed apparatuses, 11 of them are over the national recommended age of use by many years. Incredible that such vital equipment is functioning at all, and only because of the diligence of the department to doing good maintenance.

April 4 represents the 50th anniversary of me fully claiming my identity as a “follower of Christ.” It is, of course, also the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. While the exact circumstances of who shot King still remain an American nightmare, it was clear to me that evening in Spokane upon receiving the news that King was dead that my family identity as Christian was real and genuine. No longer a faith of my parents it was now mine to own.

A woman on Leonard Lane in Kalispell “understands that cats are free spirits,” but was having issues with a frisky feline that was reportedly coming into her house causing cat fights with her furry companion. Let me introduce myself: My name is Brodie Verworn and I will become an elected member of the Evergreen Fire Board come the summer of 2018. I have been in EMS since 1998, starting out in Seeley Lake, then moving to Ravalli Countyy in 2000, becoming an EMT-B, an EMT-I, then moving up to the Flathead in 2004, where I joined the South Kalispell Volunteer Fire Department, then was hired on at the Big Mountain Fire Department, where I have spent the last 12 years as a career firefighter/paramedic (obtaining my degree in paramedicine in 2010,) also having been a part of the Bigfork Fire Department for over seven years. I am also the Western Region Team Leader for the SIM-MT project, putting on high fidelity simulation education for hospitals, clinics, EMS and fire departments all across Montana.
