LGBTQ+ Alliance built on foundation of unity
As the Chairman of the Flathead LGBTQ+ Alliance, I feel it is my duty to respond on the behalf of the Alliance because of the letter published in the Daily Inter Lake on Aug. 12. The featured opinion piece contained hostile remarks aimed at the LGBTQ+ community and the children of said community. Not only is this degrading, it is downright wrong.

When Dean Baquet and the editorial board of The New York Times made the decision not to publish the cartoons of Muhammad, the Times was reporting about (because they had provoked mass demonstrations, acts of terrorism and threats of more terrorism in Europe), I was disgusted by their cowardice. Now the editors of the Daily Inter Lake without facing any such danger has decided to “re-examine our policy” of trying to publish all the letters they receive from local residents. Why? Because they received a number of letters castigating them for publishing on August 12 a letter from one Tim Adams that was awash in ignorance and anti-gay prejudice, presented as a defense of scriptural teaching by someone wholly ignorant of the linguistic, anthropological and historical context of the bible he knows only in whatever English translation he uses. Happily, there were several excellent responses to this medieval moron, addressing his ignorance and bigotry. Unhappily, there were many more letters arguing that Adams’ benighted views should not have been published. That is the approach of folks like the Love Lives Here crowd who think that by gagging the expression of wrong and backward ideas they lay them to rest. And that is the wrongheaded notion to which the editors are bowing with their re-examination of their letters policy. If Dean Baquet is a coward, the Inter Lake editors are cowards thrice over. —Lee Smith, Somers

Theraputic boarding school in Marion expands programming
At the end of a dirt road on a remote hillside in Marion sits the Montana Academy, a therapeutic boarding school for troubled youth. On a blistering July afternoon, students rotate from one cabin to another, meandering through neatly landscaped grounds with an idyllic water feature at the center. The only other apparent activity is a pair of horses idly grazing in a southern field. Once the change in periods is over, the academy, at least on the outside, descends back into solitude.

The reason schools are not safe
(Hint: It’s not guns)
The slaughter which occurred in a Florida school in February probably would never have taken place had the safeguards supposedly built into our safety network, which make it more difficult for the mentally dangerous to obtain firearms and/or ammunition, been followed. However, from all outward appearances, this system failed at all levels. From parents to school to public mental health to local police to the FBI, all failed to take appropriate action.

You can barely see the grooves on Lynn Shaw’s scalp. But you can feel them, she says. With hands that once trembled too much to write, she traces them — two wires, just beneath the skin, running from the top of her head and down her neck, to a cardbox-shaped protrusion in her chest. A touch on the iPad and the wires respond accordingly, sending pulses of electricity to her brain. Her hands are steady, and she can’t feel a thing.

It’s somewhat easy for us Montanans to grow complacent in the debate over border walls. Shucks ... we have our lovely screen of mountains and a sparse population to diminish the urgency and relevance of the matter. Yes, the “handshake agreement” based on homespun eye contact and seasoned character recognition is giving way to trust based on lawyers, paperwork, and second, third, and even fourth-party representation. Yet a thin vestige of flesh and blood interaction still exists, and keeps our unique country corridor connected to values our beloved predecessors cherished.
