Firefighters from Smith Valley, South Kalispell, Bigfork and Marion begin making laps in their gear on Sunday afternoon, July 31, at Legends Stadium. LETTER: Have the effects of wind power been studied enough?

One of my former physics professors told me “you don’t get nothing for nothing.” He was explaining that when we transform energy from one form to another, there is always something given up. An example might be that when we are pushing a lawnmower, we are converting calories in our body to kinetic energy that is moving our body and the lawnmower. One of the losses is productive energy in the form of heat.

OPINION: Gianforte, not Bullock, has Montanan values

Oftentimes the first casualty in politics is the truth. Currently, the Democrats are using out-of-state dark money to bastardize the truth relating to Greg Gianforte and stream access issues. In reality, Gianforte’s approach to stream access is the ideal balance between public access and property rights, which is where most Montanans position themselves.

OPINION: Support transfer of bison range to tribes

One of the core principles of Montana Conservation Voters is the protection of our public lands as well as access to those public lands. At the state and federal level, MCV has vehemently opposed efforts to transfer or sell-off public lands to state or private ownership or even to study these misguided proposals. Such an effort would certainly lead to loss of access to pristine public lands and likely mismanagement by states who are inexperienced at multi-purpose land management.

LETTER: Stand firmly behind our officers in blue

Hey, all you decent citizens of America. We better stand firmly behind our men in blue. We should never send one to jail or jury duty, not guilty every time. In this violent society that we are subject to on a daily basis, we need our law enforcement to keep law and order. They know what it’s all about because they’re in it every day. They make split-second decisions — their lives depend on it. They have to know who you are and they have to see some hands, black or white or any other race. If you don’t get it you better start getting it because we stand behind our men in blue, period.

LETTER: Support police

Hey, all you decent citizens of America. We better stand firmly behind our men in blue. In this violent society that we are subject to on a daily basis, we need our law enforcement to keep law and order. They know what it’s all about because they’re in it every day. They make split-second decisions — their lives depend on it. They have to know who you are, and they have to see some hands, black or white or any other race. If you don’t get it, you better start getting it because we stand behind our men in blue, period.

LETTER: Support changes in forest plan

In late May, the U.S. Forest Service published its proposed alternatives for the management of the Flathead National Forest. The management plan ultimately selected will be in effect for the next 20 years — and most likely well beyond that. So this is important to all of us. Until the public comment period ends Oct. 3, we have the opportunity to weigh in on the alternatives, and the Forest Service will consider our input.

LETTER: Look at the German model for harvesting timber

The recent announcement of the closure of Plum Creek Lumber Mill in Columbia Falls got me to thinking (always a danger!). In terms of how our federal government should handle our national forest, I think they should look at what Germany does with its forests. For the past 300 years Germany looks upon their lumber forests as a crop. Many homes in Germany are still built only of wood and many homes are still heated with wood. As a crop, for every tree cut down, a new one is planted.

LETTER: GOP should try governing for a change

Benghazi, Benghazi: the Republicans have been trying for 25 years to nail Hillary Clinton with something that will stick, and now they have failed again, with a politically motivated investigation that cost the taxpayers $7 million, took longer than the 9/11 probe, and basically found nothing new.

OPINION: Undercutting the Gordian knot of the courthouse couplet

Here is a simple but effective way to deal with the U.S. 93 problems at the south end of Kalispell and have two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound at the county facilities at 800 S. Main St. without the previous traffic problems. This kind of solution is done all over the world including in the U.S. All the proposed solutions so far involve going around the building and jail at this location including possibly tying up other parallel streets. The simple solution to this problem is just to take U.S. 93 under the county courthouse and historic jail building.

OPINION: Reasons to keep open the Kalispell City Airport

The Kalispell Life-Flight plane is flying-in a wounded man. His “golden time,” his best chance for survival, fades. Seconds count! If the pilot lands at Glacier Park International Airport, the waiting ambulance will take 20 minutes to get to the hospital. If he lands at Kalispell City Airport, the ambulance will pull up to the emergency entrance in less than six. Which should the pilot choose?
