One of my former physics professors told me “you don’t get nothing for nothing.” He was explaining that when we transform energy from one form to another, there is always something given up. One of the losses is productive energy in the form of heat.

Oftentimes the first casualty in politics is the truth. Currently, the Democrats are using out-of-state dark money to bastardize the truth relating to Greg Gianforte and stream access issues. One of the core principles of Montana Conservation Voters is the protection of our public lands as well as access to those public lands. At the state and federal level, MCV has vehemently opposed efforts to transfer or sell-off public lands to state or private ownership or even to study these misguided proposals. Such an effort would certainly lead to loss of access to pristine public lands and likely mismanagement by states who are inexperienced at multi-purpose land management.

America’s death penalty systems, regardless of which state, are much more than that ... they are, in fact, varying degrees of torture — lethal injection, hanging, electrocution — all painful and drawn out methods of demise. For that matter, simple carbon monoxide poisoning is painless and, by now, we all know there is an abundance of that stuff!

LETTER: Support police
Hey, all you decent citizens of America. We better stand firmly behind our men in blue. In this violent society that we are subject to on a daily basis, we need our law enforcement to keep law and order. They know what it’s all about because they’re in it every day. They make split-second decisions — their lives depend on it. They have to know who you are, and they have to see some hands, black or white or any other race. If you don’t get it, you better start getting it because we stand behind our men in blue, period.

LETTER: Look at the German model for harvesting timber
The recent announcement of the closure of Plum Creek Lumber Mill in Columbia Falls got me to thinking (always a danger!). In terms of how our federal government should handle our national forest, I think they should look at what Germany does with its forests. For the past 300 years Germany looks upon their lumber forests as a crop. Many homes in Germany are still built only of wood and many homes are still heated with wood. As a crop, for every tree cut down, a new one is planted.

OPINION: People are the problem, not goats
The May 29 Inter Lake (“Border collie trained to work at Logan Pass”) carried the news that Mark Biel, GNP’s natural resources program manager, will soon begin using his own personal dog Gracie to herd (“harass”) mountain goats away from tourists who approach the animals too closely, raising concerns that a visitor might be injured.
LETTER: GOP should try governing for a change

OPINION: Undercutting the Gordian knot of the courthouse couplet
Here is a simple but effective way to deal with the U.S. 93 problems at the south end of Kalispell and have two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound at the county facilities at 800 S. Main St. without the previous traffic problems. This kind of solution is done all over the world including in the U.S. All the proposed solutions so far involve going around the building and jail at this location including possibly tying up other parallel streets. The simple solution to this problem is just to take U.S. 93 under the county courthouse and historic jail building.

OPINION: Reasons to keep open the Kalispell City Airport
The Kalispell Life-Flight plane is flying-in a wounded man. His “golden time,” his best chance for survival, fades. Seconds count! If the pilot lands at Glacier Park International Airport, the waiting ambulance will take 20 minutes to get to the hospital. If he lands at Kalispell City Airport, the ambulance will pull up to the emergency entrance in less than six. Which should the pilot choose?
