Stumpjumper Days get under way at 8 a.m. today at Flathead Valley Community College.

Loggers compete in Stumpjumper Days

Hosted by the FVCC logger sports team, competition will include chopping, sawing, ax throwing and pole climbing.

Competition takes place until 5 p.m. behind the college just north of the tennis courts.

The public is welcome to come and observe the loggers as they compete for top awards. Admission is free.

Astronomy day planned at college

The Big Sky Astronomy Club and Flathead Valley Community College, will celebrate

Astronomy Day 2005 today.

Free and open to the public, the all-day event themed, "Bring Astronomy to People," will be held at FVCC's Kalispell campus beginning at 9 a.m.

There will be numerous astronomy-related activities and displays throughout the day.

Weather permitting, several club members will have telescopes with attached solar filters set up outside providing participants with the opportunity to safely view the nearest star, the sun.

At 10:30 a.m., club President Mark Paulson will present "Wonders of the Universe" in one of the college's classrooms.

At 1:30 p.m. in the FVCC cafeteria, Scott Askew will deliver this year's keynote talk on "Robonaut: NASA's Humanoid Robot."

Symposium focuses on women's health

St. Joseph Medical Center sponsors its annual Women's Health Symposium from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. today at KwaTaqNuk Resort in Polson. Titled "The Healthy Woman: Nothing is More Important than Your Health," the symposium focuses on women and heart health.

Keynote speaker is Deborah Sybrant from the International Heart Institute in Missoula.

Tickets are available at the front desk of St. Joseph Medical Center and includes lunch for $5.

The center also holds its third annual Baby Blanket Day on Monday. Volunteer to spend a few hours starting at 10 a.m. in the second-floor conference rooms cutting, ironing and sewing receiving blankets for all new babies born in the hospital.

Bring your iron or sewing machine or serger. Lunch will be provided. RSVP by calling Toni Young at 883-1676.

Children invited to fishing derby today

The Mountain Mall and Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks are sponsoring a free Kids Fishing Derby from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Mountain Mall in Whitefish.

Children are encouraged to bring their fishing poles and parents. Prizes will be awarded for kids 12 and under.

It's bingo night tonight at West Valley

The West Valley School PTO is sponsoring its annual Bingo Night tonight. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and play gets under way at 6 p.m.

Big-theme baskets and door prizes will be awarded, and many handmade items will be up for silent auction.

Concessions also will be available.

The PTO will also kick off its barnwood birdhouse fund-raiser with the sale of handmade birdhouses built from the recycled wood of a West Valley barn.

Proceeds go toward the purchase of a new sound system for the gym.

Archers compete Sunday at Lone Pine

On Sunday the Flathead Valley Archers will host their 21st annual Lone Pine 3-D Shoot at Lone Pine State Park five miles south of Kalispell.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and all archer scorecards must be turned in by 3:30 p.m. There will be two loops with twenty targets each staged around Lone Pine State Park.

Concessions will be available. Archers are urged to carpool if possible due to limited parking availability.

All Lone Pine visitors not in the archery tournament - including hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians - are urged to stay only on the main trail for safety between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday.

Other activities

A Spring Flea Market and Garage Sale will be today and Sunday from 9:30 am. to 4:30 p.m. in the Expo Building at the Flathead County Fairgrounds.

An assortment of adult poultry will be on display today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Murdoch's Ranch & Home Supply in Kalispell. Michael Bleick of the Smith Valley 4-H program will bring a Black Jersey Giant, Golden Sex Link, Rhode Island Red, White Polish and an Egyptian Fayoumis and will share with the public information about the development from chick to adult.

A benefit potluck for rebuilding The Halfway House at Essex begins at 4 p.m. in the Essex QRU building. There will also be a mini raffle and drawing for the three prizes in the ongoing raffle. Call George or Mary Bolta at 888-5562.
