Kalispell residents have an opportunity to serve on a number of community boards, including a newly formed citizens advisory committee.

The City Council approved the creation of the advisory committee last week.

It's responsible for making recommendations about the development of a new community recreation center.

The committee, which will have between nine and 13 members, will review the suitability of existing facilities for the community center, as well as the possibility of building a new facility.

Design, location, type of programs that will be offered, and options for paying for the center also will be considered.

Anyone who wants to serve on the committee should submit a letter of interest, no later than Sept. 9, to the city clerk at P.O. Box 1997, Kalispell, MT 59903.

Mayor Pam Kennedy will appoint members to the committee at the council's Sept. 20 meeting.

Other board openings include:

-Kalispell Board of Adjustment - Two openings for city residents.

This board holds public hearings and makes final decisions about conditional-use permits and appeals to the city's zoning ordinances.

-Airport Advisory Board - One opening for a Kalispell property owner.

This board provides advice and recommendations to the city manager about the operation of the city airport and adjacent property.

-Architectural Review Committee - One opening for a Kalispell property owner or resident, or someone who is actively engaged in business in the city.

This committee reviews and approves plans for new commercial, retail and industrial buildings and some apartment buildings, as well as major remodels, and makes recommendations about preferred architectural, landscaping and graphic design standards.

-Street Tree Commission - Two openings for city residents.

The commission helps address tree planting, protection, maintenance and removal issues for the city.

Letters of interest for these positions, including name, address, phone number and qualifications, should be submitted to the city clerk by Sept. 9.
