WHS golfers rule play in prep opener

GREAT FALLS - Whitefish swept the medalist honors and team titles to open the 2005 high school golf season with an impressive display of talent and depth Tuesday at the Great Falls Invitational.
Maresa Jenson put together rounds of 75-85-160 to post a 13-shot victory and help the WHS girls to a 54-shot win over runner-up Bozeman.
Whitefish's Sam Krause used a pair of 72s for a 144 total and a one-shot edge on Nick Richards of CMR and Tyler Holtet of Whitefish, who both tied for second.
Holtet had a shot at being the medalist, sitting at 2-under par heading to the final hole. But he finished with a double bogey.
The Whitefish boys, with four golfers in the top 10, broke the 300-score barrier both days on the team front, 296-292, for a 588 total. Billings West was second and 19 shots back.
"I hope we can still keep shooting these numbers (as the season goes along)," said WHS coach Terry Nelson.
"I think we can get better."
Joining Krause and Holtet in the top 10 were Derek Denning, fourth, 74-37-147, and Matt Krause, 10th, 76-76-152.
Joining Jenson in the top 10 for the WHS girls was Alex Micklewright, 83-90-174. She tied for second.
"She (Micklewright) has learned how to score on days when she hits the ball not as well as she likes," said Nelson.
"I was really pleased with Porche Erekson and Quinn Micklewright. She (Quinn Micklewright) broke a 100 today; great for a freshman girl."
Erekson was the team's No. 3 peformer, shooting86-107-193.
Chelsea Ray, who was scratched from the lineup Monday after suffering a bee sting on her hand, shot an 86 on Tuesday.
The Flathead boys put together a strong showing, placing fourth. The Braves, 314-316-630, were led by freshman Larry Iverson, who tied for seventh. Iverson opened with a 78 and shot 72 on the final day for a 150.
Kyle Dunfee was eight shots back, 80-78-158.
The Flathead girls finished 11th, 409-418-827. The Bravettes were led by Emily Betthauser, 101-91-192.
"I think they are only going to get better," said FHS coach Alice Ritzman.
"Nobody's putting was very good, boys and girls. Iverson might have been the exception."
Ritzman was pleased Betthauser improved by 10 shots from day 1-2.
Brooke Sampson shot 93-103-202. That was second best on the squad.
Ritzman call Sampson's effort "a pleasant surprise."
