Braves settle for 3rd at Holiday Classic

| December 18, 2005 1:00 AM

GREAT FALLS - The effort was there, but the points weren't as Flathead's wrestlers finished in third place at the Holiday Classic Saturday night with 201 points. Reigning state AA champion Billings Skyview placed first with 227.5 points, just 7.5 points ahead of Havre.

The Braves had nine tournament placers, but no individual champions. Brian Ham (105 pounds), Ricky Janes (119) and Austin Zapata (125) all advanced to the championship final match, but fell short. Janes forfeited his match because of a shoulder injury.

Ham lost his first match of the season to Myles Mazurkiewicz of Havre. Ham beat him last week at the Mining City Duals 4-3, but fell on Saturday night, 11-7.

"This was a great tournament overall," Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said. "The points didn't end up where we wanted, but we are happy with where we are at in the season. It's tough to rise to the occasion two weeks in a row."

The Braves finished second last week at Butte.

The CMR tourney, with 35 teams, is always a litmus test for the state tournament.

"Guys that can place here, they are going to do well at state," Thompson said.

Of the nine placers for Flathead, six of them lost their last match, many of them nail-biters. Duran Flaget and Levi Holt both finished on a high note, winning their third-place matches.

"Levi took third in a loaded weight class," Thompson said. "Flaget stepped up his game this weekend and wrestled real well."

Whitefish finished 14th with 86 points. The Bulldogs' Kevin Kaltschmidt placed fourth and Brad Watterud took second. The team had four wrestlers battling on the second day, and the showing bodes well for their hopes at state.

Whitefish and Flathead are both back in action Thursday with the Bulldogs hosting Libby and the Braves hosting Sentinel. The Braves are also just two weeks away from competing at the National Duals in Rochester, Minn.
