The Flathead High speech and debate team suffered its first loss of the season at the Hawker Invitational in Bozeman last weekend.

Flathead finished second behind Bozeman. Bozeman scored 179.5 to Flathead's 131.5.

"This is a great rivalry," Flathead head coach Greg Adkins said. "Bozeman has a great team, with super coaches. They have improved a great deal in the past two months.

"We are surely not in panic mode by any means, but I hope this performance makes our team a bit hungrier," he said. "The difference in this tournament was a lack of balance from the FHS squad and domination from Bozeman in Duo Interp, Humorous Interp and the Debate events."

Bozeman scored 56 points by taking the top four slots in Duo Interpretation.

Flathead is taking a holiday break from competition, then will compete at the Magic City Olympiad in Billings before heading to the State AA Tournament in Butte at the end of January.

Columbia Falls, meanwhile, topped ABC competition in Bozeman with 13 points.

Tashia Shupert of Columbia Falls was the only Class A student to advance to the finals in Bozeman.

She finished fifth in Original Oratory.
