Free throws help Polson down Bigfork

BIGFORK - Polson used a big edge in free throw shooting to beat Bigfork Friday evening 53-43.

The Pirates went to the line 23 times, sinking 17. Bigfork, on the other hand, had just nine attempts, making four.

And that was the difference in the Northwestern A girls basketball game.

"We couldn't get any breaks," said Bigfork coach Nate Hammond. "They flat out killed us from the free throw line. We just couldn't keep our kids out of foul trouble."

Bigfork, thanks to a 24-point second quarter, led 30-21 at the half.

"We were shooting pretty well," said Hammond in the second period. "Had five 3-pointers in that quarter."

But Polson (4-3 and 8-6) outscored Bigfork (2-5 and 8-6) 32-13 in the final half.

"They (Pirates) came out and played real aggressive defensively in the second half," said Hammond.

"Pressured our guards good. We knew we had to take it to the basket. We just didn't have any success driving against them."

Polson, which had only four players score, was led by Strohm Fouty's 18 points.

Nikki Thompson, 12 points, led Bigfork.

Defense carries Eureka

EUREKA - Eureka held Mission scoreless for the opening quarter of play en route to a 56-23 District 8-B girls basketball victory Friday night.

Eureka (8-0 in league and 9-6 overall) led 14-0 and 31-5 after the first two quarter stops.

"We played very unselfish tonight," said Eureka coach John Hammond.

"If anybody was ahead of us (on the fastbreak), they got the ball and we finished."

Tish Hall, 16 points, and Amy Roberts, 11, paced Eureka offensively.

Hall also wound up with five steals and three assists.

Mission, which has now lost three times to Eureka this season, was led by Tarn Potter's eight points.
