Public invited on tour of forest salvage project

| February 16, 2005 1:00 AM

The Flathead National Forest is offering a public tour of the Beta Salvage Sale at 10 a.m. on March 1.

Reservations are required by calling the Hungry Horse and Glacier View District at 387-3800 by Feb. 25 to ensure adequate transportation and safety gear is available.

Crews are salvaging timber south of Hungry Horse Dam in areas burned by 2003 wildfires. Roads and trails in the area are closed while timber is being harvested.

Helicopter activities, felling next to the road and heavy log hauling prompted the closures, which are expected to remain in effect through April 1. Additional closures may occur throughout the summer.

The Beta Sale will remove approximately 3,000 truckloads of wood. Pyramid Lumber of Seeley Lake is the contractor.

For more information about the post-fire project, including maps, contact the Hungry Horse and Glacier View District Office at 387-3800 or visit http://www.fs.fed.us/r1/flathead/
