Arlee nips Eureka in 8-B's first round

LIBBY - Eureka, in a rally mode the entire game, fell one-point short of Arlee Wednesday in opening-round boys action at the District 8-B basketball tournament.

Arlee, outscored 10-8 in the final frame, managed to hold on for a 46-45 victory.

The Warriors (8-11) led 13-9, 28-23 and 38-35 after the first three quarter breaks.

Danny Miles, 19 points and 12 rebounds, paced Arlee. He had 10 points in the first half.

Eureka's Matt Peltier led all scorers with 20. Isiah Linnell followed with 13 for the Lions.

Peltier had 13 points in the first half and did the bulk of his scoring at the free throw line, sinking 10 of 12 charity shots. Those were the only free throws Eureka had in the contest.

Eureka beat Arlee 72-66 in Arlee back on Jan. 15.

Arlee moves on to face top-seed Plains (16-2) today at 1 p.m. in the semifinals.

Eureka drops down into loser-out action Friday, 2:30 p.m., facing the loser of tonight's other semifinal contest at 7:30 - Thompson Falls versus St. Ignatius.

The championship game is set for 8 p.m. Saturday.

St. Ignatius shook free after a slow start, leading 8-5, to drill Troy.

St. Ignatius (10-9) outscored Troy (1-18) 25-7 in the second stanza for a 33-12 halftime advantage.

Gus McDonald tossed in 19 points and Tyler Trudeau 12 to carry St. Ignatius.

Troy was led by Destin Cain with eight points.

Troy slips into loser-out play Friday, 6:30 p.m., facing the loser of today's Plains/Arlee game.

LIBBY - Troy held on to top St. Ignatius Wednesday during first-round action of the girls District 8-B basketball tournament.

St. Ignatius (4-15) had a chance to at least tie, even win the game, with one second remaining and trailing 29-27.

Tarn Potter, 17 points, was fouled on a 3-point field goal attempt, sending her to the free throw line for three shots. Potter, however, could connect on just one.

Lucy Davis tallied 16 for Troy (6-13).

Troy moves on to play top-seed Eureka (12-6) today at 1 p.m. in semifinal action.

In the other semifinal contest, Arlee (10-9) faces Thompson Falls (11-8) at 6.

St. Ignatius falls into the loser-out bracket play on Friday at 1 p.m., facing the Arlee/Thompson Falls loser.
