Merrill Hugh Gilstad, 80, of Columbia Falls, passed away July 12, 2005, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

He was born July 16, 1924, in Keene, N.D.

Preceding Merrill in death were his parents; three brothers, Albert, Walter and Clifford; and his sister, Myrtle.

Merrill grew up in Keene on the family farm with five brothers and seven sisters. He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy. He then became a journeyman pipe fitter and plumber for most of his business life, settling in Columbia Falls.

Merrill loved to bowl, fish and hunt, and most of all he loved to hang out with his many friends and family.

He was a father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great friend.

Merrill leaves behind a long list of family, including six sisters, Geneva Chambers, Dorothy Paddock, Lillian Gravos, Elenor Metzer, Illa Prestagon and Ida Olson; and two brothers, Norman Gilstad and Raymond Gilstad; nine children, Eunice Green, Linda Harner, Nancy Gilstad, Elaine Wilson, Marie Gilstad, Clifford Gilstad, Edward Gilstad, Jennie McCandless and Johnny Gilstad; and his special friend and companion, Gail Thompson.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 16, at the Columbia Mortuary in Columbia Falls, with the Rev. David Jones officiating.
