A 34-year-old Kalispell man died Tuesday evening in a traffic accident on Foy's Lake Hill, west of Kalispell.

Larry Todd Flatt died at the scene, and two passengers were hurt.

Flatt was driving north on the two-lane road when a southbound vehicle struck a deer, throwing it into the path of Flatt's vehicle, according to Deputy Coroner Dave Leib.

Flatt swerved to miss the deer and lost control of his vehicle, which rolled once on the roadway and then rolled over the guardrail. Leib said the vehicle rolled at least twice more down a steep embankment and then struck the Smith Valley Fire Department building.

Kalispell and South Kalispell fire departments responded, along with officers from the Sheriff's Office and Highway Patrol.

A man inside the car was treated for minor injuries at Kalispell Regional Medical Center. A woman suffered more significant injuries, Leib said.

Speed and alcohol are thought to be contributing factors in the crash, he said.
