Fog, ice closes Sun Rd.

| June 3, 2005 1:00 AM

Poor driving conditions, including fog and icy roads, forced the closure of the top portion of Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park on Thursday morning.

The section of scenic highway over Logan Pass is not expected to reopen until sometime today, weather permitting.

The National Weather Service predicted 4-7 inches of snow over mountain passes on Thursday night.

A 12-mile section of Sun Road - from The Loop to Jackson Glacier - was closed because of the weather and concern about rockslides, according to a park press release.

Going-to-the-Sun Road remains open between the West Glacier park entrance and The Loop and between the St. Mary entrance and Jackson Glacier Overlook on the east side.

For road updates, visit the park's Web site (http://data2.itc.nps.gov/glac/roadstatus/roadstatus.cfm) or call park headquarters at 888-7800.
