Sun Road opens, then closes again

| June 9, 2005 1:00 AM

Glacier National Park's Bowman Lake Road is slated for intermittent closures through much of June and the park's Going-to-the-Sun Road was briefly reopened Wednesday, only to be closed again because of rain and snow at higher elevations.

A 12-mile section of Sun Road between the Loop and Jackson Glacier Overlook was closed Tuesday because of snow and poor visibility. It was reopened at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, but bad weather prompted another closure within a few hours.

Park officials caution visitors can encounter winter conditions, including slush, ice or snow, along the alpine highway.

For the next few weeks, the road leading to the Bowman Lake Campground will be passable from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and after 2 p.m. on weekdays, and all day on weekends.

The intermittent weekday closures are being implemented to allow for reconstruction work on the road, including grading and new gravel surfacing.

The work is expected to be finished by June 24.

The road is on the northwestern side of the park near Polebridge and the North Fork Flathead River.
