Haas moves on in match play golf

Defending champ Chris Haas of Bozeman and top-seed Chris McConnell of Billings both survived two rounds of Montana State Amateur Match Play Championship action Friday at Eagle Bend Golf Club.
Haas, seeded 18th, defeated Nick Schwinden of Helena, the 15th seed, 2 and 1 in first-round action and then came back to best second-seeded Woody Spainhower of Bozeman in the second round, 2 up.
McConnell defeated Seth Enes of Missoula, 7 and 6, and then dispensed with Bennett MacIntyre of Helena, 5 and 4. MacIntyre was seeded 17th.
In the opening round, only three top 15 seeds fell - No. 4 Mike Rider of Manhattan, No. 14 Corey Slocum of Missoula and Schwinden.
The two lowest remaining seeds are last year's finalists. Ron Ramsey, the runner-up from Bigfork, is No. 13.
The other five undefeated golfers in the Championship Flight for match play are: No. 3 Shawn Tucker of Whitefish; No. 5 Josh Hedge of Billings; No. 6 Kelbi Lee of Billings; No. 7 William Foust of Ronan; and No. 8 Logan Ward of Missoula.
The tournament was delayed twice in the morning because of lightning. Both stoppages never exceeded 30 minutes.
Golfers also had to contend with wind and rain.
Weather conditions improved in the afternoon.
Tournament play continues today and concludes on Sunday.
