Ward, Jenson state golf champs

POLSON - Logan Ward of Missoula and Maresa Jenson of Whitefish wrapped up Montana State Junior golf titles Thursday in tournament play at the Polson Country Club.

Ward, 16-17 age division, birdied the second playoff hole to edge Tyler Holtet of Whitefish for the top spot. Holtet parred that hole.

Ward shot a 3-under par 69 to lead first-day action and closed with a 72 for a 141 total.

Holtet shot 73-68-141. The 68 was the best score on the second day of play. Holtet was also the lone golfer to crack 70 for the final 18.

Rob Fust of Park City closed with a 71 for a 144, good for third place. He opened with a 73.

Jenson, 16-17, put together back-to-back rounds of 85 for a 170 total and a four-shot victory over runner-up Kristine Samsel of Polson, 89-85-174.

Alex Micklewright of Whitefish and Maria Holiday of Bozeman tied for third with 178s.

In addition to age group champions and overall winners, the top four overall boys will advance to Junior America's Cup at Powderhorn Golf Club in Sheridan, Wyo., and the top four overall girls move on to Junior America's Cup held in Guadalajara, Jalsico, Mexico.

There was a playoff for the final spot on the America's Cup between William Foust of Ronan, Ethan Lee of Great Falls and Eamon Clancy of Park City. All finished regulation play with 149s. Foust won that spot with Lee as first alternate and Clancy as second.
