Over 1,000 athletes from 18 teams will crowd Legends Stadium Saturday for the annual Archie Roe Invitational track meet.

The Whitefish boys and Flathead girls are defending meet champions.

"When this track meet first started off 31 years ago, there were six to eight teams," said Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge.

"We had a varsity and freshman meet. Now it's varsity, JV and freshmen; actually six track meets going on at the same time."

Action begins at 10 a.m. with the first running event - 100 varsity trials - and several field events.

Last year, seven records fell at the Roe.

The boys will have seven event winners returning and the girls five. Of that group, the two biggest names are Flathead senior Zoe Nelson, the defending champ and meet record holder, in the 1,600 and 3,200, and Columbia Falls senior standout Bekah Stoltz. She dominated the field events a year ago by winning the shot put, discus and javelin.

The other returning Roe champions are: (boys) Dane Steward, Plains, 1,600; Ben Johnson, Big Sky, 3,200; Ryan Ross, Flathead, 300 hurdles; Blaine Baker, Libby, javelin; Chris Hicks, Whitefish, high jump; Ty Palmer, Big Sky, long jump; Kyle Rosenbaum, Columbia Falls, triple jump; (girls) Cricket Johnston, Flathead, 100; Amber Aikins, Cut Bank, long jump; and K.C. Dahlgren, Big Sky, pole vault.

The Flathead boys will be missing two sprinters with leg injuries - Garrett Smith and Duane Cooper.

"Just holding them out," said Hodge.

"Giving them some rest time; get them healthy."

The Flathead boys have performed well on the track and in the field to date, finishing first and second at invitationals in Missoula and Butte.

"It's been a good year (thus far)," said Hodge.

"The kids have performed better than expected."

Hodge and FHS girls coach Jerry Boschee will use this meet as a tune-up for divisionals May 20-21 in Missoula.

"No. 1, make sure we stay healthy," said Bsochee.

"We kinda place kids in events where we want to see them hit something big."
