Breaking barriers

For 4 1/2 hours Saturday at Legends Stadium, Eureka's Emylyn Bentley was in constant motion.

The talented junior competed in five events, placing first four times, which resulted in two District 8-B meet records, and was second once.

Bentley ran four of her races in a span of three hours. She then had an 1 1/2 hour break between her fourth, the 800, and her final event, the 1,600 relay.

"I wasn't too excited when I saw that," said Bentley of the meet's schedule for events.

"I knew it was going to be tough."

She only had a 25-minute breather between the 1,600 and 400. The 800, the event she was focusing on the most, was an hour later.

"My plan was to go hard for the record," she said of the 800

"So I held back in the mile and just paced myself."

But she said her 1,600 strategy went out the window heading into the final 100 meters of the race and with her running third.

"I just had to get first; I'm too competitive," she said.

So she sprinted past Dwy Simpson of Thompson Falls and Mandi Truman of Eureka to win it with a time of 2:21.8.

She followed that with a second-place time in the 400, 1:03.86.

"Not my best of the season," she said of the 400.

But she made up for that by winning the 800 and setting a meet record with a time of 2:21.8. Tami Heckman of Plains held the old mark, 2:23, set in 1994.

"My favorite event," she said.

"I just love it."

There's also some family history attached to the 800 as well. Her two older brothers - Cole and Luke - and older sister - Holly -competed in that event for Eureka. And her younger brother Caleb, a seventh grader, is now running it.

Bentley opened the meet at 11:05 a.m. running a leg on Eureka's winning 400 relay, 52.30. She closed it out at 3:40 p.m. by anchoring the 1,600 relay to a meet record time of 4:16.09.

"It was fun," said Bentley of her busy, but productive day.

She scored 33 points for the Lions, who claimed the district title.

"I like it when I don't have to wait all day for my first event.

"I would love to (do six, or more events)," she continued.

"But I can only do five (the maximum allowed by the Montana High School Athletic Association for single day meets). I always wanted to do the javelin. I like the jumps."

Bentley did long and triple jump in the past, but the finals in those events always conflicted with her running.

Eureka finished with 153 points to top Thompson Falls, 130, for the girls title.

Thompson Falls, however, ran away with the boys crown, amassing 257 points. Eureka was second with 88.

There were four meet marks set with Eureka responsible for all.

Matt DeLong broke his brother's (Jacob's) 300 hurdle district mark (40.04) with a time of 39.82.

DeLong also won the 110 hurdles.

And Stephanie Sanders lowered her 100 hurdle time from 16.01 last year to 15.86.

The top five individuals and relays advance to the Western B Divisional in Polson Friday and Saturday.
