Mary Patricia Granier, 83

Mary Patricia Granier, 83, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2005, at her residence in Havre.

A prayer vigil/ rosary service will be held 5 p.m. Friday, May 20, at Holland and Bonine Funeral Chapel in Havre. Her funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at St. Jude Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert D. Grosch as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery. A fellowship luncheon will be held at the St. Jude Parish Center immediately after the services at the graveside.

In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may make memorial contributions to Bear Paw Hospice, 30 W. 13th Street, Havre, MT 59501; or to St. Jude School, 624 Fourth Street, Havre, MT 59501; or to one's favorite charity.

Arrangements are entrusted to Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.

Mary was born to Ross and Gertrude (Gallo) Lence on Oct. 12, 1921, in Whitefish.

After graduating from Whitefish High School, Mary married Frank Granier of Havre in November 1939.

Following the death of her husband in November 1952, Mary attended Northern Montana College, where she graduated with honors in English in 1963.

She taught at Sunnyside Grade School before moving to Havre High School, teaching English to so many of Havre's youth. Mary retired in 1983, giving her more time to visit family and friends.

Mary's quiet but vibrant spirit touched the lives of many students, parents, colleagues, friends and family. She will be dearly missed.

Over the years Mary was active in numerous Havre organizations. She was a member of the Secular Order of Franciscans, the Altar Society, Catholic Daughters, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Mary enjoyed mentoring students at the St. Jude Grade School, which kept her young and involved in the lives of Havre's youth. She was an accomplished pianist, playing for her many friends at the Community Care Center.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank Granier; siblings Marlo Lence and Louise Strunk; one daughter, Annette Granier; a daughter-in-law, Trish Granier; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Granier.

Mary is survived by four of her five children, Louie Granier of Carson City, Nev.; James and Judie Granier of Littleton, Colo.; Carmela and David Hughes of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; and Frank and Libby Granier of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; 10 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
