COLUMBIA FALLS - Finally, a soccer match.

"We were probably the last club to start out," said Columbia Falls boys coach Peter Browne.

"It's been three weeks of practice; just great to (finally) get a game in."

Columbia Falls, state runners-up a year ago, kicked off their season with a 5-0 triumph over Livingston in a Class A nonconference matchup on Friday.

Cory Pete scored twice and Jake Bengtson, Dustin Gibson and Guy Smith also had goals.

The Wildcats dominated play, outshooting Livingston on goal 27-3.

"At times we played well," said Browne. "The first game, a lot of nervous kids out there, but it's great to get the season rolling."

Columbia Falls hosts Belgrade today at 1 p.m.

"We weren't tested in goal very much," said Browne.

"Hopefully we'll get better as time goes on."

"Disapointing," said Whitefish coach O'Brian Byrd.

"We just did not show up. By the time the guys decided to show up, we had already dug ourselves a 2-0 deficit. It's tough to climb out of that."

Taylor Schwickert scored Whitefish's only goal - a penalty kick in the 61st minute of the game.

Both teams finished with 11 shots on goal. Libby's Zach Carlson had eight keeper saves.

"It was fairly even," said Libby coach Mike Wickstrom.

"Belgrade played a tough game, shut down the middle."

Wickstrom said the Loggers had some chances at the end, but "we didn't put it home."
