FHS golfers finish well down the line

BUTTE - Flathead posted lower team scores on both the boys and girls side on a cold, rainy Friday at the Butte Invitational golf tournament.

Playing the Butte Country Club, the FHS boys improved by seven shots from Thursday's round at the Old Works Golf Course, where players had to contend with windy conditions.

The Braves shot 324-317-641.

The FHS girls did even better, beating their opening session score by 12 strokes. The Bravettes had totals of 415-403 - 818.

Billings Senior, 296-307-603, edged Billings West by four shots for the boys team title and was led by medalist Geoff Oliphant, 71-73-144.

Billings Skyview, 385-370 - 728, and Bozeman, 366-362 - 728, tied for first place in girls play.

Jamie Davis of Skyview, 81-87 - 168, claimed medalist honors.

Flathead wound up seventh in the boys field and the girls placed last, 10th.

Flathead did not have a golfer crack the top 10. Taylor Gardner led the Braves, 79-78 - 157, with Larry Iverson, 82-78-160, and Kyle Dunfee, 80-80-160, next.

"Not consistent enough with the basics, hitting the greens" said FHS coach Alice Ritzman of the performance by the boys.

"Missing way too many greens with their short irons. We have to address that."

Brooke Sampson, 104-93 - 197, and Emily Betthauser, 98-101 - 199, were the two leaders for the Bravettes.

"Her best score ever," said Ritzman of Sampson.

"I can't tell you how happy I am for her."

Flathead's next action is the Flat Invitational next Friday and Saturday.

The state tournament follows Oct. 7-8 in Great Falls.

"It seems like they can do everything but score well," said Ritzman of her players.

"We'll work really hard the next two weeks before state and see if we can address some of these issues."
