Crews get upper hand on fires

Firefighters on the Kootenai and Flathead national forests staffed over 20 small fires Saturday. All the fires, believed to be holdovers from Thursday night's lightning storms, were less than a quarter of an acre.

The storms delivered 1,200 strikes across Lincoln County and about half as many in Flathead County, but they also brought rain. Fire management officers credit the precipitation with keeping the fires small.

The Red Eagle Fire on the east side of Glacier National Park also received a little rain on Saturday. The fire is about 32,000 acres and 75 percent contained.

A Type 2 incident management team - the same team there before the Type 1 team arrived - will take over at 6 a.m. Monday. Helicopters continue to conduct bucket drops, and crews continue mop up at the fire.
