Frederick C. Young Jr., 80

Frederick C. Young Jr., died Sunday, April 1, 2007, in Cottage Grove, Ore., at the age of 80. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 5, at the Church of Christ, Sixth and Gibbs, in Cottage Grove.

Mr. Young was born Sept. 29, 1926, in Lodge Grass to Fredrick and Hazel (Waggoner) Young. He grew up and attended school in Montana. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947, and was part of the occupation forces in Japan.

He married Ruth Ellen Wartnow on Nov. 24, 1950, in Kalispell. He worked in coal mines in Montana, and worked in the woods and lumber mills until joining the U.S. Forest Service in 1964. They moved to Cottage Grove in the mid-1970s, working with the Forest Service until his retirement in 1984.

He enjoyed carpentry, reading, volunteering, and was involved with Boy Scouts in Montana. He drove for South Lane Wheels and Lane County Bloodmobile after his retirement. He was a member of the Church of Christ, Sixth and Gibbs, in Cottage Grove.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Cottage Grove; sons, Rick Young of Salem, Ore., son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Betsy Young of Jasper, Ore., son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Kay Young of Springfield, Ore.; daughters, Debby Young of Cottage Grove, daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Curtis King, also of Cottage Grove; sister, Madelyn Coleman, of Kalispell; and brothers, Joe Young, Wes Young, and Gary Young, all of Kalispell; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove.
