MISSOULA - What a thrilling finish!

Missoula Big Sky led the Flathead Braves by four points after 16 events in Saturday's Missoula County Invitational.

That meant the Braves 1,600 meter team had to win or be second and had to finish two places ahead of Big Sky's 1,600 team - just to tie the meet.

"We won it and Big Sky was fourth. We ended up winning the meet by one point," said Flathead head coach Dan Hodge.

"We ran by far our best time (3:29.51)," Hodge said. "It might even be a state best right now."

It is a state best - the previous top time was Butte's 3:31.2.

"It was thrilling for those kids there to win the meet and realize they could do it," he added.

Flathead came out with 124 points to 123 for Big Sky. CMR was a distant third with 56 points. Columbia Falls, behind Kyle Jangula's first place long jump (20-1 3/4) and second place triple jump (42-8), was fourth.

On the girls side, Big Sky scored 109 1/2 points to win it. Flathead was second with 92 points.

Flathead's Dan Ogden won the shot (51-7) and the discus (156-9) and was named Class AA field MVP.

Flathead's Seth Grossman ran a 4:26 to win the 1,600.

"The kids put it together. We never had a lot of firsts, but the kids plugged away and when it all added up, we were ahead of Big Sky," Hodge said.

"I'm really happy."

So was Bravette coach Jerry Boschee.

"Big Sky had a pretty dominating performance. They were pretty tough all the way through. But we had a real good day off the track. Our field events - long jump, triple jump and discus - they went real well for us," he said.

The Bravettes had four placers in the long jump, two in the discus and one in the triple jump.

"We had three events that really did us well," Boschee said.

"But when it came to the track, we didn't show up. From the first event, we couldn't catch our breath or find our niche," he said.

There were two bright spots on the track.

Flathead's Shannon Ross ran 61.7 to place third in the 400 and the 1,600 relay team of Briana Ori, Janae Lister, Nicole Hall and Ross ran 4:12 to win that event.

"That was a good way to end the meet.

"I think we learned where our weaknesses are. Right now, we're lacking a little bit of depth, but the girls realize where they are and where they want to go," he added.

Other locals who claimed wins at Missoula were Whitefish's Cort Rogers, 110 hurdles (15.55) and Courtney Ferda, 200 (26.13), Columbia Falls' Chase Fairbank, high jump (6-2) and Polson's Danielle Rowe, high jump (5-4).
