MISSOULA - Wolfpack soccer is off to a perfect start.

The Glacier High School soccer teams earned victories in their first games Tuesday, sweeping Missoula Big Sky in a Western AA doubleheader.

The girls began the day with a 3-1 conquest, and the boys capped the afternoon with a 6-4 triumph.

Both Wolfpack squads look to improve to 2-0 Thursday when they visit Missoula Sentinel. The boys play at 3 p.m., followed by the girls at 5.

Sophomore Maddey Frey didn't take long to register the first goal in Wolfpack history.

Frey scored in the seventh minute, courtesy of Courtney Porch's assist, to put Glacier on top 1-0. Frey added an unassisted goal in the 34th minute, giving the Wolfpack a 2-1 halftime lead.

"She knows where the net is," said Glacier coach Paul Holmgren.

Glacier's Sidney Sharaf scored in the 47th minute to ice the game. Frey and Jenna Mace combined for the assist.

Big Sky out-shot Glacier 23-6, but Kathleen Huquet scored the Eagles' only goal in the 15th minute as Wolfpack goalkeeper Kayla Byle notched eight saves.

"I thought that we would be very competitive with this team," Holmgren said. "They have a lot of girls about the same age as us. They're not a real senior-heavy team."

Holmgren learned a lot about his squad of underclassmen.

"They're very good at seeing the field and hustling," he said. "They move the ball very well. They're supportive of each other, which is really nice to see."

The Wolfpack used a balanced attack to outscore the Eagles 3-2 in both halves.

Ron Howell, Josh Neiman and Brad Holmgren scored Glacier's first-half goals. Neiman struck once more in the second half before Jared Rice added a pair of goals.

Bryan Edwards and Neiman had one assist each.

"We were a little surprised to win our first game," said Glacier coach Ryan O'Rourke. "We knew we'd match up fairly well, but having a totally untested team, there's a lot of uncertainty there."

Glacier out-shot Big Sky 20-15, and Wolfpack goalkeeper Kasey Haugan totaled seven saves.

Pete logged three assists and Stoneman had two. Bowman and Casey Hebert each registered an assist.

Columbia Falls (1-1, 0-1) got its first victory of the season, though it was nonconference as the schools face each other twice more in Northern A play.

It was the Pirates' season opener.

"Lack of aggression on our part," said Polson coach Jess Kittle. "First-game jitters, and guys getting out there for their first varsity soccer game."

The Wildcats out-shot the Pirates 33-9 as Columbia Falls goalkeeper George Kimerly notched three saves.
