Braves crush foes in Pat Weed Duals

GILLETTE, Wyo. - There seems to be no stopping Flathead High School's wrestling team.
The Braves rolled through the first day of competition at the Pat Weed Duals in Gillette, Wyo., by crushing Deer Park, Wash., 55-6, Star Valley, Wyo., 62-9, Bismark, N.D., 63-9, and Gillette 45-23.
Deer Park is currently ranked No. 1 in Washington and finished fifth at the Tri-State Tournament last weekend in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Flathead won Tri-State.
Star Valley won the 3A wrestling title in Wyoming a year ago while Bismark is currently the top-ranked team in North Dakota.
And Gillette, they are ranked No. 1 in Wyoming and defending state champions in their class.
"Just a total team effort," said Flathead coach Jeff Thompson.
"The score might not show how close the duals were, but we had to battle. The mats were a battle field. The conditioning kicked in and we won a lot of matches in the third period."
Flathead heavyweight Tyler Thomas beat a two-time state champion and nationally ranked wrestler from Gillette.
Another key match in the Gillette dual was a 160 pounds. Caleb Allen-Schmid went up against another standout wrestler.
"His goal out there was to survive, not get pinned," Thompson said.
The Gillette wrestler won by a technical fall.
"We thought the matches would be a lot closer," Thompson said.
"Our boys came to wrestle. We just continued to attack them, ended up on top. We're very happy with where we are right now.
"If we win this tournament, it will be a huge accomplishment for our program."
Flathead is back on the mats today versus Havre. The Blue Ponies posted a 3-1 dual mark on Friday. The loss was to Gillette.
