Flathead advances 13 to semifinals

BILLINGS - Dan Ogden is looking forward to a second shot at Butte's Trevor Hass.

The Flathead heavyweight lost a decision in the finals of last weekend's Western AA seeding tournament to the Butte wrestler.

But with two pins each in the first two rounds of the All-Class State AA wrestling tournament Friday, it looks like they might be on another collision course at MetraPark.

"I'm hoping to get another shot … if things go my way," Ogden said.

Odgen's semifinal match today is against Skyler Best of Billings Senior. Hass will face Toby Erickson of Helena. Both will have to win for the rematch to happen in the finals later in the day.

Their last match was "pretty intense," Odgen said.

It was the first match of Ogden's injury-shortened season that went three rounds.

"The whole gym was roaring," he said.

"I put my heart into it. I tried my hardest - and it kind of didn't turn out the way I was hoping. My stomach didn't take it too well.

"I feel good - and I really want another shot at him," he said.

As for the rest of the Braves, Friday wasn't perfect, but it was pretty darn good.

Flathead has 13 wrestlers in the semifinals and 26 of the 28 it brought to the tournament still alive.

Flathead leads the team scores with 171.5 points. Billings Skyview is second at 152, C.M. Russell is third at 124, Great Falls High is fourth at 113.5 and Butte is fifth at 105.5.

The 13 in the semifinals are Shawn Lau (98), Dan Jenkins (105), Brian Ham (119), Austin Zapata (130), TC Decker (135), Ryan Thiel (135), Caleb Allen-Schmid (140), Bryce Stacy (145), Tyler Wells (152), David Lau (160), Luke Fischer (171), Drew Watkins (189) and Ogden.

"It's looking really good," Ogden said. "We had a couple of letdowns early and we kind of lived through adversity."

"We wrestled pretty good, but not great," said Flathead coach Jeff Thompson. "We lost a lot of close matches."

Flathead trailed Billings Skyview after the first round Friday.

The adversity was a loss in the first round by 98-pounder Zach Reimnitz. Reimnitz had his opponent pinned, but wound up pinning himself as well. The match was awarded to the opponent.

Perhaps most disappointing, though, is that three-time state placer Ricky Janes is one of the two Braves out of the tournament.

Janes, Flathead's 125-pounder, fell into the toughest draw of the day, according to Thompson. Janes faced Bozeman's Kyle Taranto in the first round.

According to Thompson, Taranto is one of the top four wrestlers in the Eastern AA division. But he was sick during the seeding tournament last weekend and placed seventh.

Janes lost a decision to him.

Janes then faced defending state champion Nash Hallfrisch, in his third match, and lost. Hallfrisch was upset in the quarterfinals.

"My heart goes out to him. It's not like he didn't try," Thompson said.

"There are so many emotions here. Every little thing seems like a big thing. It's a small sample of life."

But, he added, Jordan Nelson has stepped it up in that weight class.

"We've got to look at that, too," Thompson said.

"We started building the momentum in the quarters."

It started with a Allen-Schmid, a 140-pound freshman.

"He got things turned around for us," the coach said.

Allen-Schmid pinned CMR's Kyle Flood in 1:52 to advance to today's semifinal.

"He's got his game face on," Thompson said.

"He's a killer out there. He's so strong."

Allen-Schmid's win was followed by a tech fall and four straight Flathead pins.

"Momentum started to go in such a positive way for us," Thompson said.

But even with so many in the semifinals and such a large lead in the team scores, Thompson said the team trophy has yet to be locked up.

"We hope to get eight in the finals," he said.

"That basically should put the nail in the coffin."
