Libby's Tabis earns coach of year award

Ed Tabis of Libby has been named Montana Coaches Association coach of the year for boys' track.

Tabis and the Libby Loggers won the Class A state championship in Missoula on May 26. Libby scored 43 points on the final day of the two-day meet to beat Laurel for the title

Libby's last state track championship was in 1945.

The complete list of MCA coaches of the year awards, which was announced Sunday, for spring sports follows:

Boys' Track and Field

Class AA-Rob Stanton, Billings West; Class A-Ed Tabis, Libby; Class B-Jim Benn, Huntley Project; Class C-Brice Turk, Joliet.

Girls' Track and Field

Class AA-Steve Schwab, Bozeman; Class A-Don Samuelson, Belgrade; Class C-Jim Benn, Huntley Project; Class C-Roy Lackner, Big Sandy.

Boys' Golf

Class B-Jeff Armstrong, Shepherd; Class C-Dave Perius, Gardiner.

Girls' Golf

Class B-Jeff Strickland, Three Forks; Class C-Mary Majerus, Valier.

Boys' Special Sports

Jim Gregg, Cut Bank, Class B-C tennis

Girls' Special Sports

John Smith, Columbus/Absarokee/Park City, Class B-C softball
