Libby takes 2 from Kootenai Valley; Lakers unbeaten in Bozeman tournament

POLSON - Eric Locke's pitching and hitting and Brandon Thompson's bat carried Mission Valley to a 20-5 victory Friday in the Firecracker Tournament at O'Malley Park.

Locke (6-1) went the distance in the five-inning game, checking Glacier on four hits. He fanned 13, issued five walks and hit one batter.

Locke struck out four batters in the first inning and fanned the side in the second, fourth and fifth.

At the plate, Locke went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.

Thompson, 2-for-3, also had three RBIs. He homered in the first inning with one runner on. His blast, the fifth of the season, hit the scoreboard in left field, 330 feet.

Locke leads the team in homers with six and has 23 doubles on the season, three shy of the Mariners' team record.

Mission Valley (35-6) has won seven straight. The Mariners face the Bitterroot Red Sox tonight at 5:30.

The tournament winds up Sunday.

Lakers unbeaten

in Bozeman

BOZEMAN - The Kalispell Lakers Class A American Legion baseball team is 1-0-1 at the Howard Rein Memorial Tournament.

Kalispell beat Havre, 5-0, on Thursday. It tied Missoula, 3-3, Friday.

The Lakers play two games today. They play the Butte Muckers at 11:45 p.m. and Lethbridge at 5:15 p.m.

The tourney concludes Sunday with seeded games. The Lakers are in the three-team Pool A with Butte and Lethbridge.

Reid Buckely gave the Lakers a 3-0 lead with a two-run double in the third inning, but Missoula put two runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning and then added the tying run in the fifth to send the game to extra innings.

The game ended in a tie because of a time-limit rule.

Brian Sneck and Buckley each had two hits for the Lakers, who out-hit the Mavs, 10-7.

Sneck pitched five innings of six-hit ball. He struck out six and walked three before giving way to Ben Sansaver. Sansaver struck out six in three innings of shutout work.

Libby sweeps

Kootenai Valley

EUREKA - The Libby Loggers picked up a Western A sweep over Kootenai Valley Friday, 7-1 and 8-4.

The Loggers are now 3-4 in conference play and 17-18 overall after being swept by Sandpoint, Idaho, Wednesday, 4-2 and 11-1.

Kootenai and Libby will meet again for a doubleheader in Libby Monday at 5 p.m.

Steve Bertelsen was a triple away from hitting for the cycle, had two RBIs and pitched six strong innings.

He struck out eight, walked four and allowed just three hits in picking up his fifth victory of the season. His home run was the fifth of the season.

Libby catcher Matt Schad collected three RBIs and Kasey Basso went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
