Strong start for Flathead netters

GREAT FALLS - The Flathead High School tennis teams enjoyed strong first days at the Northern AA divisional tournament in Great Falls on Thursday, particularly in boys' singles play.
The Braves' Wesley Mathison, Jon Hammett and Travis Cattron each collected quarterfinal victories.
Mathison and Cattron advanced in straight sets, defeating Great Falls High's Zach Alfred and Great Falls CMR's Slater Belew, respectively. Hammett downed CMR's Wylie Agamenoni 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
Flathead's Brett Harrison won his first-round match before falling to CMR's Josh Tierney in quarterfinal play and Alfred in a consolation match.
Flathead's Jason Brown and Jordan Vaughan earned a first-round doubles victory against CMR's Tyler Mortenson and Zach Winter before falling to fellow Braves Josh Brann and Cody Harrison in the quarterfinals.
Flathead's Kevin Burfeind and Erik Skybak beat Great Falls' Evan Clark and Jeff Wigen in quarterfinal action as well.
Elli Brown collected the Bravettes' first singles victory, defeating CMR's Megan Ormseth in opening-round straight sets. Brown fell to teammate Izzy Makman in quarterfinal action before bouncing back with a consolation triumph over Great Falls' Brooke Perry.
Flathead's Sara Newgard rallied past CMR's Sophie Lockerby in the quarterfinals before losing to Great Falls freshman Sam Selstad in the semifinals.
The Bravettes' Alix Dixon and Hanna Hanes made an outstanding run in doubles play, beating CMR's Sara Palagi and Healy Lyons in the first quarterfinals and Great Falls' Becca Triplett and Kelly Herremans in the semis. Not all doubles scores were available.
